While the UK Supreme Court has ruled that the definition of a 'woman' in the Equality Act, 2010 is biological at birth and those who identify as women but were born biologically 'male' (even with a Gender Recognition Certificate) are now excluded from 'women-only' spaces (such as public toilets and refuges), there are still things you can do.
The Scottish Government lost the case, brought against them by transphobic group 'For Women Scotland'.
Transphobic author, JK Rowling, is reported to have donated a lot of money to For Women Scotland's campaign, helping them secure victory.
If Trump's transphobia in the USA wasn't enough, it has now spread across the Atlantic Ocean to the UK.
Many transgender folk in the UK are devastated by this ruling, though it does affect transgender persons in other countries who visit the UK.
It has been stated that transgender people still have protection from discrimination under the Equality Act, 2010 but how can exclusion in times of need or an emergency be protection or non-discrimination, when they clearly ARE.
While none of us, whether in the UK or not, can alone change the ruling, there are things you CAN do, to show your in solidarity for transgender people affected.
• Boycott anything to do with JK Rowling.
Stop reading any of her books and stop watching any films made based on her books.
• Boycott anything to do with Duncan Bannatyne.
Stop using his gyms. Stop watching any film or television programmes he appears in.
• If you have UK voting rights, avoid ing politicians who agree with the or campaign for, the ruling.
This includes:
Kemi Badenoch, UK Conservative Party leader.
Rosie Duffield, Independent MP.
Russell Findlay, Scottish Conservative Party leader.
It will be interesting to see what UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, a human rights lawyer, will do.
As much as there are ers of the ruling, there are many who are disappointed with it and are ready to the transgender community.
