Red: a Trainer who can catch a large variety of Pokémon and bond and train with them. Or Satoshi/Ash Ketchum: a Trainer who only catch, trains, and bonds with a handful of Pokémon. Keep this in mind. Both Trainers are pretty much the same character with the same power of friendship philosophy, but with different personalities and way of training Pokémon. One Trainer has a large quality of Pokémon to strategically use and bond with. While the other only has very small quantity of Pokémon to train and bond with. I damn well know who I would rather be. Be smart and honest with your choice.

Let's ve honest, Ash is just a cheap copy of Red... it even got his name, Satoshi was one of the standard names for Red, which was a nod to Pokemon's Creator. Same goes for Gary, his Japanese name, Shigueru, was a nod to Mario and Zelda's creator Sigueru Miyamoto which Satoshi considered his Rival. If there's a choice between Games or Anime Characters, always go for the Games.
