Knudsen said that his intent for the character was "something whose motivations can barely be comprehended and which cause unease and terror in general population". He also claimed to be inspired by Stephen King's story "The Mist".
His story grew to where people started giving him suggestions that maybe the Slenderman causes amnesia, that maybe he is stalking children, perhaps he has tentacles coming from his back, maybe he offers contracts to children. And the suggestions kept coming.

As the urban legend grew, the stories kept adding more and more definition to the character, but varied depending on the storyteller. And over the length of a year that story made its way to Creepypasta.

According to several news agencies,
"A Wisconsin woman who, at age 12, itted she stabbed a classmate to appease a fictitious horror movie character." ~ from USA Today
Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weir, "lured their classmate, Payton Leutner, to a Waukesha park after a sleepover. Geyser stabbed Leutner 19 times while Weier egged her on. Leutner barely survived.
The girls later told investigators that they attacked Leutner to earn the right to be Slender Man’s servants and they feared he would harm their families if they didn’t follow through." ~ from CNN
Now according to investigators both girls pleaded guilty. However the verdict came back not guilty by reason of insanity.
Geyser was sentenced to 40 years to life in a mental institution. Weier was sentenced 25 years to life in a mental institution.
Weier was released back in 2021 after only serving 7 years. It was deemed that she was no longer a threat to society or herself.
Now in 2025, Geyser is back in courts with the possibility of being released into a group home under supervision until 2058.
Through several interviews from other news agencies both girls, now women have maintained their stories they once believed that Slender Man was real and they had no other choice. People have over the years debated back and forth if these two were truly that unstable at the age of 12.
After scouring many news articles and attempting to find doctors analysis, it is inconclusive today if they were truly mentally unstable. Yet, when they were found not guilty of reason of insanity, this would have had been proven in court for such a verdict to be rendered.
In the end Slender Man is still considered to be a fictional character. Creepypasta stands by its claim that it is merely fiction.

Guess you could say I'm a bit of a fan of Slender Man. I played a video game about him & watched the movie in theaters when it released. Very intriguing character, I don't believe he exists in the real world but it's wild how real implications have happened simply from his fictional existence overtaking minds
