White Trash.

Trigger Warning: Abuse(Emotional/Physical), Racism, Drug Use, Language, lots of heavy topics.

Seeing a recent post on here that got taken down (fortunately), reminded me of my time in middle school and elementary.

I grew up in a very poor environment, during the day my life consisted of being stuck in my room and avoiding my father/mother/aunt if they were drunk. Sometimes they would let me go outside if my dad was up for it.

During the night my dad would blast music and drink until it erupted into a fight with my mum, things would get incredibly intense and I have a vivid memory of my mum grabbing me (7) and my little sister (3) and running into the bathroom and locking it as blood poured down from her face, as she had been beaten by my father. He tried busting down the door, but he left before the police got there.

My time at school wasn't the best. I was bullied heavily because I wore the same clothes for a few days. (At the time, my father was neglectful, and didn't do laundry.)

I also the term "white bitch," and "white trash," getting thrown at me from random people I didn't even know. I was pushed constantly for being a "poor white whore." (Those are the 3 words I .)

I know some of yall are gonna say its physically impossible to be racist to a white person and what I expirenced wasn't "real" racism, I personally strongly disagree with you.

Calling people white trash is wrong, calling people things they don't want to be called is wrong. And yes to me the word "White trash" is offensive to me, and I absolutely despise people who use this term as an insult. Physically assaulting people is wrong, regardless of race, sexuality, etc.

I used to think that you can be racist towards white people in the US, because racism is being discriminatory against a certain race. And then I took history classes and read up on poc stories and etc to find that there may not be racism against white people because racism is a social construct to discriminate and disadvantage or oppress the minority race. I once watched a white woman say that she doesn’t know of any race other than white people who would use a racist term so often on their own people, because this woman was called white trash by another white person. So it makes me wonder, is it more classist than racist? Do people call a white person “white trash” to a narrative that white people are below the right to be living comfortably in the United States or do they say it based on the perception of that white person’s attitude/appearance/socioeconomic status? I agree that you were wrongfully treated, and I myself have witnessed a poc call my white bus driver white trash in elementary school because they had a disagreement. Your experience is valid and those who bullied you were terrible people, but in the conversation of racism in the United States, I don’t think that white people face racism in the way it has transformed from discrimination on a skin color basis to a history and current situation of oppression on a skin color basis. I think they go hand in hand, but are very different at the same time, and it’s hard to describe. I don’t mean to invalidate your experience, I’m just putting in my thoughts on the idea of racism towards white people in the United States (and if you don’t live in the US, then this didn’t apply to you.) sorry for the long post. I hope everyone is doing well!

The definition of racism disagrees with those who say that you can't be racist torwards white people.

I know white people don't face the amount of shit other races expirence, but honestly saying that you can't be racist to a white person solely because I live in the US just sounds weird and wrong to me.

To me the term "white trash" is classist and racist.

Like I said, it goes hand in hand, but are very different. Because racism is relative to location, it’s very important that I say “white people in the US”. As a white person in Japan can face comparable racism to that of poc in the US. You can face discrimination as a white person in the US, but it’s different from facing oppression as a poc in the US. I have no issue with people saying that white people face racism, because of the definition, I only have an issue if they use it to counter the racism against poc in the US (which I don’t think you are doing, but your post sparked conversation within my own mind) As I said before, I’m not invalidating your experience nor am I saying that you think you have faced racism comparable to poc, I just think that racism has evolved into something more in the US, which goes beyond only discrimination against skin color. There’s a very thin line, but totally different sides. In the end, all races face racism, but I guess what I’m thinking about is that poc face racial oppression and discrimination whereas white people can face racial discrimination. I agree that white trash is racially discriminatory and classist.

I totally agree with you that it is wrong but in my opinion unless people have died by those raped, beaten taken out where they were then I wouldn’t see it as racist that’s just plain out bullying. If it were to happen to someone of color then that term has mostly likely been used in history which the same thing would’ve have happened to their people (everything I’ve listed)

We shouldn’t be discriminating against ANY race

People claim that saying stuff like “white trash” or making jokes against cis hets are just “harmless jokes”

But we shouldn’t be making fun of anyone, regardless of race or sexuality. People are trying to justify themselves for making “harmful jokes” about other people, when they’re not even part of that group of people.

Whenever I see people trying to justify this behavior, they’re usually the ones making such jokes and are usually not a part of the group that’s being made fun of.

They claim it’s okay for minorities or LGBTQ to make fun of hets or whites, because they never had to face the same pain and backlash as them. It’s true that whites and hets would never have to face the same shit, but by saying discriminatory shit to them, they’re literally stooping down to the same level as the bigots from long ago who harmed their race/sexuality. Being hurt in the past doesn’t justify you hurting others in the present.

I agree with you ^^^

but the idea of making fun of cishets usually isn't anything malicious compared to the amount of people who STILL harass and abuse LGBTQ+ and make us face daily discrimination.

That’s true, but some heterosexual people could feel uncomfortable when hearing people make those kinds of jokes, and if someone politely asks to stop, then the best thing to do is just to stop with the jokes and continue later when they’re gone. Heteros do not face the same horrible things that lgbtq go through, but that doesn’t mean its right to continue making fun of them if they’re uncomfortable with it.

i used to think the whole “white trash thing” was a harmless joke. i had no idea it was actually being used to put white people down because of their living situation/ how their parents treat them. when i had asked my grandma about it when i was little she said it was a horrible derogatory term that is used to degrade and put white people down, but as i grew up people always said it was just a fun joke and that they only used it to laugh and that while people were okay/ not being hurt by this.

this is absolutely awful and i’m so glad you’re sharing this. to be bullied for how your parents/ aunt treated you is disgusting. i really do hope things are better now and you’re out of that situation. honestly, how can people go to school and be so uneducated that they’d bully you for things that were your parents fault?

sorry for this essay of a comment but wow did i learn a lot. thank you for the informative post and stay strong :heartbeat: :revolving_hearts: :sparkling_heart:
