“You want me to tell you about my father? That monster of a man?” The words poured out like venom. Narrowed eyes fixated on the well dressed detective across from her. This had been going on for months now. The Polomo family being harassed by American officials. Trying to get any intel they could on Eduardo Senior. Carmen was the last person on their list to interview- well more so interrogate.
The seat under her creaked as Carmen leaned forward grabbing her purse from off the table. Paying more attention to placing her emotional crutch between her lips. “I haven’t seen him since I was 16. what do you think I know about him now?” The slight accent she held from home peaking through. Sparking the end of the cigarette carmen took her drag. The inhale filling her lungs with the familiar burn she loved. The detective let out a deep sigh. Unbuttoning his suit jacket as he leaned forward on the table. Clasping his two hands together as a look of annoyance washed over him. “This act is cute Miss Polomo. you and I both know your father loved you more than you loved him. So let’s cut the games and tell me what you really know” his eyes were fixed on hers.
His eyes were fixed on hers. Searching, reading her every emotion for what felt like minutes of silence between the two. The only sound that filled the cold interrogation was the singe of her drags. There was no getting out of it. Carmen had blood on her hands to deal with. If she didn’t speak. Who’s to say she wasn’t going to be the next person of interest. Especially when her little brother Eduardo Jr. was following in their old man’s footsteps.
Flicking the ash into a cigarette tray. A sigh left her red stained lips. Smoking pouring out with it. “My father is a complex man. He wanted the life of a family man, but we were merely a mistress to his real love.” Leaning back in the metal seat. The brunette crossed her arms. Her cigarette hanging delicately between her fingers. “My Abuelo got my father involved when he was ten. Being a delivery boy. I don’t know along the way where he took over. My entire life I just knew parents didn’t want the Boogeyman’s daughter being their kids friend. It’s what lead to the raid that sent us here….You know i’ve been here for twenty years and this is when you finally decide to bring this up?!”
Eduardo wasn’t just her towns boogey man. He was the ghost that haunted her wherever she went. It wasn’t in the ways people spoke about him, the pictures in her mother’s home, to the interrogation she was now in. No, he haunted her mind. Every long gaze into a mirror, every anger driven outburst, the way she even treated love. All she ever could see is the man that she grew to despise- yet still hold so much love for.
“We’ve been building a case against your father for the past ten years Miss Polomo. He’s a very sought after man, and every other person we’ve talked to always mentioned you being some sort of weakness” The detectives words ignited a fire inside her. she? her fathers weakness? it felt almost humiliating to be described as such. As if it was one of the biggest sins to commit. “You know nothing about that man- he lies , manipulates, and double crosses everyone. Even his own flesh and blood.” Leaning over the table she pointed at the detective across from her. Her half smoked cigarette tucked between the two fingers. “The only reason why i’m that man’s weakness is because i was the only one to see the wolf in sheep’s clothing. I told him my goodbye at sixteen and I haven’t looked back.”
Maintaining the eye she held with the detective. Carmen smudged out her vice in the ashtray. Interlocking her fingers she had them rest under his chin. A mischievous smile grew on her lips. “No one is gonna flip on him like you want. He gives back to the poor in my town and is ruthless to the rest. With the loyalty and fear he has back home….you’re never going to get him.” Her words came off as more of a warning than a fact. Knowing the further government officials poked the sooner they’d either fall under her father’s pay roll, or never be heard from again.
The silence in the air between the two was deafening. Carmen staring daggers into the man’s while he tried to profile her every move. Breaking their gaze Carmen leaned back. Grabbing her purse with her to stand. looking down at the detective. “If you’ll excuse me i have a portfolio to finish for my spring line. Since i’m not under arrest i’ll be leaving now” Her red bottoms clicked against the cement. Making her way to the interrogation room door. “So you’re okay with the boogeyman still out there?” The man asked as Carmen twisted the door knob. Her grip tightening on the metal to hold back the venom that wanted to spew out.
Looking over her shoulder a sigh of slight defeat left her lips. Quickly replacing it with a more stern tone that followed.”We all have skeletons we’re not proud of. Some just still have their flesh” The words lingered in the air as she slipped out of the room. Her stride quick down the halls as tears started to collect in her eyes. No matter where she went Carmen was reminded that she was the daughter of Eduardo Senior, a ghost, a memory. He was a boogeyman to all, and she was his daughter.
