He is not in love with John, something pretty obvious, no matter what shippers want, and it can’t be Mary because she’s his best friends wife, Molly could eventually be his flame because he has stopped being abusive to her and has come to respect her and Sally is just awful so no way there, so hotsy-totsy Irene is all that’s left and he did save her and all of that, plus in interviews BC says they slept together off screen after he saved her.

Actually there was zero suggestion of romance in the originals. Irene was the one woman who bested him in of intelligence and therefore he respected her. She was the one woman who was on an equal playing field with him. Also, at the end of Scandal in Bohemia she gets married and escapes with her husband.
