Kian: Hey Mia, how was school?

Amelia: [shrugs] It was...okay

Kian: Just okay? You don't sound too sure about that.

Amelia: It's... I dunno. Same as usual I guess.

Kian: So, did you talk to anyone new today? You know, maybe in a conversation or hang out with some of the other kids?

Amelia: [hesitant but soon shakes her head quietly] I only hang out with Theo and read in the library when he wasn't around.

Kian: I know Theo is your best friend and he's a good one at that, but it's good to talk with other people.

Amelia: Not many people like me.

Kian: Now, that's not true. You just have to give them a chance to get to know you.

Amelia: [thinking] Why would they? People think I'm odd.

Kian: [softly, with affection] You don’t have to rush it. I’m not saying you have to make a bunch of new friends overnight. But what about trying to speak to someone in class tomorrow? You never know... maybe you’ll make their day just by being you.

Amelia: I...I'll think about it

Kian: I get that it’s hard, sweetheart. But I’ve seen how kind you are, how smart you are. Just... start with one person, one conversation. You’re a great listener, you know. That counts for a lot.

Amelia: Hi Theo!

Theo: Hey! You're still coming over after school tomorrow?

Amelia: Yeah. My parents says it's ok.

Theo: Great! Where were you at lunchtime? I was playing football and thought you'd cheer me on.

Amelia: Oh... I was in the library. I'm sorry. There was just a lot of people and...

Theo: That's ok. I know you don't like being in big social gatherings. Maybe we can go to one of the fairs? I think there's one happening in a few weeks.

Amelia: Erm...yeah. Sounds fun.
