At some point you have put food in a microwave and asked, how does it heat up my food so quickly? I mean plastic doesn’t really heat up, nor glass. Only the targeted food is heated up, so how does this work? Well I am here to give you an in depth detail on microwaves so you can understand how everything works.

How does the food heat up?

We all know what a microwave is and it’s purpose. But how it achieves this purpose is not well known. Microwaves have an electron tube called a magnetron which produces radiation called microwaves (if you can’t figure it out this is where the name microwave comes from). The microwaves are let out and if you ever noticed, the sides of a microwave are shiny like a mirror. This is because it is, and by mirroring the microwave radiation it has nowhere to go but to the food. Radiation absorbs into the food and transfers it’s energy to water molecules, casing then to shift and create energy. Hence, the food is cooking.

Some people may think their food is now radioactive but that is not the case. Radiation moves the water molecules and produces energy. The radiation is transferred and thus, the food cooks itself without becoming toxic. This is the exact reason plates or glass which contains little to no air, remains cool.

Why microwaves are the better option (for leftovers)

Of course using a microwave to cook everything doesn’t work. You can’t boil potatoes in a microwave. But as for leftovers, it most certainly is. Microwaves use a lot less energy than traditional stoves. This includes the fire less electronic ones, which need constant energy to create an abundant of energy in a small area, generating heat. On top of all this it takes 15-45 seconds to cook something fully in a microwave while it takes a few minutes or maybe even longer to cook traditionally. And finally the strongest point, you avoid having to clean more dishes. Or if you use a paper plate, no dishes at all!

Microwave Technology

I made it simple when saying we use the Magnetron to heat up food but there is a lot more to it. When you plug in the microwave and start the energy from your house needs to be converted in order to be used and accepted properly throughout the microwave. This is where a transformer is needed and it converts the house electricity from 120 volts to 4000 volts or higher to power the magnetron. The huge amount of electricity hits the magnetron and heats it up, boiling off electrons. Two ring magnets cause the radiation to become a specific frequency of 2.45 gigahertz. Then an antenna receives the radiation and transfers it into the cooking chamber, where your food will be cooking. Below your good is a turning table, which… is a table that turns. It is meant to evenly distribute the heat and after all these processes, your food is ready.

How was the microwave invented?

Percy Spencer was a man who participated in WWI and was dealing with radioactive weapons and radar. He had chocolate in his pocket one day and noticed it melted when in with high radiation. He then questioned if you could trap this radiation and use it to cook food. This is exactly what he did. Percy created a box with a window and a rod to create radiation which, did cook food put into it. This was later named the microwave, invented in 1945.

Conclusion

This concludes my post about microwaves. If you read this far well that’s great but didn’t expect that. If you didn’t that’s fine too it’s a lot to read and is meant to be a joke. Anyways have a good day and I’ll see you next time.
