How well do opinions contribute to tier lists?

If you've known me for awhile on this Amino. You should know that one of the things I hate is when somebody makes a tier list that is extremely bad, and in order to defend themselves, they use the quote, "It's my opinion" as a really cheap and lazy way to defend themselves. I despised it so much I decided to make a comic on what bad tier always ended like.

Well recently, I made a blog criticizing the main problem I had with ZeRo's latest tier list. The Yoshi placement. In case you were wondering, he put Yoshi as a bottom 20 character.

Now I've made some posts in the past that were, somewhat controversial, but it wasn't really anything too big. For example, a lot of people disagreed with my opinion on how Lylat should be legal, but the responses were actually really interesting and worth debating over because, they were actually giving some really good information.

But on my recent blog, that wasn't the case. There were plenty of juicy responses that I won't go over. But the one thing that I seen the most was people saying that it was ZeRo's opinion to defend him. Now I could've just left it off right there and forget they ever happened, but then it left me with a new blog idea. How well do opinions contribute to tier lists? I really hope nobody tells me something stupid like how I was, "Taking them too seriously". It's a good blog idea okay. And if I do hear someone say that, I really hope it's satire.

How do people use opinions?

This should be really obvious to be honest. On google, the definition of "opinion" is: a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.

So off the bat will will know that opinions aren't facts and more of what we believe. For example, I believe Sonic is low tier, don't @ me.

Because of these opinions, they are the reason to the placements that we make on a tier list. It's all based on one's beliefs thanks to the information that they have. On tier lists, it's up to what other people believe to determine the spots each character gets on a specific tier list.

Now keep those words in your mouth for a second my friend. While it is true that someone like ZeRo may have different beliefs compared to others, it's all based on the information. Some people think that certain characters are better than others, it may be based off of the knowledge they got, or their beliefs. But keep in mind of the definition of opinion, a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge. It can be based off of knowledge or facts.

At this moment, you may be thinking that, "well if it's not necessarily based off facts, why make this blog?". Well I would like to then say you are misunderstanding something, "necessarily". It's not completely just opinions, facts still do contribute to tier lists.

Now if we're looking at one of the many "oh these are the character I'm playing posts when Ultimate releases" that did not become accurate at the day of Ultimates release in stores, then those are list were opinions are the main factor. In other words: it's a human beings personal preferences.

Seriously, has anyone made one of those posts to follow the trend and show what characters you are going to play, and have it be 100% accurate? I know I haven't.

Opinions come in different forms, correct, objectively wrong, and just questionable. I'll get to them in more detail later.

Tier lists are according to Wikipedia: a list of anything that can be ranked. It originated from playable characters or other elements of a video game, subjectively ranked by their respective viability in high-level competitive settings.

The part "ranked by their respective viability in a high-level competitive setting" is the main thing I'll be focusing on because the main type of tier list that I'll be bringing my upmost attention to is the tier list in a competitive level. Basically how good a character is over the rest. All of this depends on two things, facts and the person behind it.

The information may suggest Mega Man and Pac-Man are top 20, but it's up to the player to decide who is better. Now in some situations like this, there's really no wrong answer, so I could put Mega Man over Pac unlike someone like Amalga who thinks Pac is better.

But one thing, the facts prioritize the beliefs. I'll be using this phrase a lot in the blog. If the facts deny the belief of Sonic being better than Yoshi, than it's safe to say that he isn't. If Sonic was in the same level of viability as Yoshi, then fine, whatever, I don't care. But the facts do not object to that so it isn't true and is more of incorrect/clown statement...why do I hear boss music? Oh yeah the Sonic players.

What people get wrong about them?

Oh I've been looking forward to this. I'm just going to get it out of the way, opinions aren't facts. Defending yourself by saying that it is your opinion will not get past me and many other people because it simply isn't a valid excuse. , the facts prioritize the beliefs.

You don't expect me to say stupid sh** like "Yoshi is better than Joker and is top 5 because that simply isn't correct". If the facts were there to suggest that Yoshi could be top 5 then I guess, that is still a clown quote regardless so don't expect me to say that unless they nerf Joker to hell because a bunch of dumba**es can't understand that Leo won Evo because he is good with Joker...oh hey, I can hear the second phase music of the boss theme.

But here is the thing, despite the fact that opinions are clearly not facts, I still got a lot of "it's his opinion" BS. So basically, I was getting told off for critiquing ZeRo's Yoshi placement; you probably know what the responses were.

People simply do not understand that a tier list that could be considered "opinionated" is still objective to criticism. Now you still may be thinking, "how could I possibly criticize a placement on a tier list?" Simple, I disagree. People are allowed to disagree and criticize what other people think on a tier list if it's objectively questionable or wrong which was in the case of ZeRo's Yoshi placement.

This was something too many people did not understand, if I wanted to explain why I disagree, I shouldn't be told that I'm complaining or whining. If you looked up what the first definition of criticism was, it should say that it is: the expression of disapproval of someone or something based on perceived faults or mistakes.

People need to understand that there is a difference between criticizing a tier list, or just plain up sh**ing on it. Criticizing what somebody thinks on a tier list is when you find the flaws of the placement. Sh**ing on the tier list is when you're saying things like, "This dumba** put Pichu under top 10" without providing any factual proof to why you don't agree with said placement. Those are the main things people do not understand. 1. Opinions on tier lists are meant to be critiqued because they are NOT FACTS. Some are objectively right and wrong, or as I like to say at times. They suck.

But however, they can still be criticized regardless. And 2. Saying "it's my opinion" isn't a valid way to justify yourself. It's like saying that you can say the N word because you are 10% black even though you don't have the . Great job Alinty. And great job to you Twitch for letting her say on the glob dammed platform.

The Rights and Wrongs

This section I'll be focusing on the things that are okay and not about them. Specifically, how they correctly and incorrectly contribute to tier lists.

Firstly, it is okay to think a certain character is better than another if they are really close to their competitive use. Some people think Roy is better, others like me believe Chrom is better. Yeah that's right, *honk* you Roy gang. However, if they really are this close, don't put them 10 spots away from each other because that's really pushing the bolder.

Also, obvious one gone but, if a character is obviously better than another, there's no reason to put them higher than said character.

Tier lists can also be critiqued. If someone is giving information that's actually interesting and worth looking at, you should take that in. Look me being a "Yoshi top 20" profit. But if someone is saying utter BS because, main bias, you don't really have to listen to them. If you wanna argue with them and enjoy the possibilities, go ahead. It's fun guys.

Speaking of main bias. A common use of objectively incorrect opinions are people maining a bad character. I'm going to remind you, the facts prioritize the opinions. You may think that K. Rool has potential to be a good character, the problem is though is that K. Rool doesn't have a single move that's actually safe on block. You can't think a character has potential when it's clear they are outright bad.

Like I've said before, these things come in different forms, correct, objectively wrong, or just questionable. Questionable opinions include me thinking Luigi is overrated and bad. Well, I'm not wrong, but a lot of people would agree. These opinions are ones that people do often disagree with, but there could be enough facts to suggest that it may actually be correct.

Opinions aren't facts. Your belief of Yoshi being mid tier doesn't matter to me. And that infamous quote will only piss me off.

That's something worth mentioning, most of the time, it's facts that contribute to a tier list. Sometimes there is going to be an oddball placement, or tier list for that matter. But in the end my quote of the day still heavily comes into play...at least I hope it does.

If I'm being honest, there's nothing that's that wrong with opinions on tier lists. It's mostly that the wrongs with them are so commonly used they just become such a common thing for that matter. That's all I really need to say.

Oh, and if it's one of those opinion lists like how a person likes to play against certain characters, there's no right or wrong answers because it's what they believe. And this time, it's okay because that isn't a list based off fact. It's based of an amalgamation of different opinions.

Finally, I've made my counter argument against the one thing that I despised for so long. That's something on my list that's finished.

The thing is though is that, I can't cross that out since I've left the pencils and pens I had at in my house. Sadly it got burnt up and hopefully I for that matter don't too because well...
