So I recently picked up Roy about a month ago and went to a convention in Delaware. They had Smash 4 running and even did everyone the favor of supplying GameCube controllers that actually worked.
So I chose to run Roy for that whole night pretty much and I felt he is a pretty effective character. He's also super fun to use but he's not the best. Though I have been told that he's apparently cheap, this coming from the competition at the convention. I'd say he's just a reverse Marth with Ike power.
Any opinions or tips for playing as Roy in Smash 4?

Ike should be helping our boy in the picture
I love em both to be honest.
I main Roy so i’ll give u my two cents:
Roy has terrible approach options, so you’ll have to rely on pressuring and bait-punish tactics. One of my common tactics is double jab and d-tilt on a shield in order to pressure my opponent to act out of it.
Utilize Roy’s extended dash dance and b-reversed flare blade to confuse ur opponent and keep him guessing.
Recover below the stage to minimize possible punishes.
Do not over-extend his attacks.
Shield pressure with jab and d-tilt.
Dont rely on d-throw to start combos. Jab and f-throw r other good options.
Some good out-of-shield attacks r jab, flare blade, blazer, and d-tilt.
He is a mid tier character, if someone calls him cheap then they just suck. Not that he's bad, but he isn't cheap.

He's also a character that can be gimped pretty easily due to his recovery unfortunately. Lol but I wouldn't consider him cheap either.

Also, basically everything he does is punishable
That's the day one deal I hated when I picked him up..
I like how they called a character that’s not even that good cheap lol. If I had a tip it’d be make people want to shield by attacking then switch to grabbing by landing without attacking

Lol thank you and I struggle with that a lot but I perform mix ups with Roy. Especially since it's so easy to land blade dance combos with him.
Luigi is better
This is true.
