Just to be transparent about things, I’m going to be talking a lot about Melee despite having never played it. I am an active spectator and thoroughly enjoy watching the game.

Introduction

Hello everyone! Welcome to the second edition of “2Bands Complains”. I’m quite excited, because today I’m get to talk about what I hate about the amino comment section. Before I get into the bad part of the Amino comment section, I should say that I’ve had many more good encounters than I have bad ones in the comment sections. There definitely are a lot of good people here, and that’s awesome. I love talking to most of you. With that being said-

Why the Amino comment section pisses me off

Some of you can be fucking idiots. A ton of the comment section can be summed up with this;

Seriously, so often I see people just say anything anti-competitive, and they get showered with likes for being “so woke and more intelligent than the rest of the community ecks dee”. If these actions represent your personality, you are likely a very irritating person to be around. If your personality is “trying to appear more intelligent than the average person by saying some ‘deep’ unpopular opinion”, I want nothing to do with you outside of this blog where I tell you why I think you need to shut up. News flash; You aren’t being cool or rebelling just because you said some stupid shit that goes against popular belief. Most of the time you make yourself look incredibly ignorant. I guess what pisses me off about this isn’t that these people exist, but rather that they get showered with . Some people here just eat this “deep” shit up, and they’re just as unintelligent as the people who make these remarks. Here are a couple examples;

These statements are stupid for a number of reasons. Saying “Fuck the tier list” is obviously ignorant because it ignores the entire population of people who would like to pick up a good character. Countless people pick good characters not only because they don’t want to handicap themselves in of competition, but also because some low tiers with “cool” things aren’t good enough characters to do their “cool” things consistently. Look to Kirby- Great combo game out of throws, but if you are under or on a platform these combos don’t work. Look to K. Rool- He has crazy stylish combos with projectiles and very fun edgeguards, but a lot of the time K. Rool players find themselves getting oppressed due to his horrible frame data. Now look to Wolf- Not only does he have a massive combo tree/sick free flow combos, but many of his combo starters are his best neutral and pressure tools. See what I mean? Top tiers can often be more fun due to them having more/better options. Additionally, saying “play who you like” is just… obvious? The amount of people that are like, “I’m gonna continue to play this character even though I’m not having fun” is zero or just about zero, let’s be real. Moving on, there’s this individual in the comment section of “Why Melee HD is a bad idea”.

See this is just another classic example of how people think using longer words and phrases such as “disrespectful” and “nothing good would come of this” in a comment about anything anti-melee will mask how fucking moronic they actually sound. Even if you completely disregard whether or not Melee HD is a good idea, this comment is ridiculous and does not deserve an ounce of your , as its reasoning for why Melee HD is a bad idea is all wrong. First of all, HD doesn’t mean that “other things” NEED to be reworked. Most people that want Melee HD don’t want any more than a graphical update (some people don’t even want that, they just want to be able to play Melee on an updated console), so the whole, “If they’re gonna put in the effort to do this, they should just do this too” argument doesn’t work. Almost nobody is asking for anything more than a graphical update. Secondly, the “just make a new smash game 4head” argument is stupid as hell for a couple reasons. 1. because a new smash game came out less than a year ago. Why would we already be asking for another smash game? 2. because Melee and whatever Smash game is coming after Ultimate are going to be two very different of gameplay. Melee HD is not taking the dev team “backwards”. Melee isn’t objectively worse than what a new Smash game would be, it’s just different. Next, another commentor on the same blog.

Fun fact friday; if you think this way you have no idea how Melee’s gameplay compares to Ultimate. “Just play Ultimate 4head” is obviously a bad argument because of how massively different Ultimate is from Melee. If they were that similar games, and if you could “just play Ultimate”, all top Melee players could easily be top Ultimate players. Only a few Melee players that are REALLY putting in the work to learn Ultimate-specific stuff have become actual threats in Ultimate bracket. Now we’re moving into a blog that analyzes why some people hate Melee. This comment section has over 700 comments so it had a whole bunch of gems.

Yup, you really nailed it with that one, pal. Melee isn’t played because it offers unique gameplay that’s loved by many, it’s nostalgia. I shouldn’t even have to further explain why this is very ignorant towards the differences between Melee and Ultimate.

See, being ionate about the game in a different way than a dev intended being a “fuck you” to the dev really depends on the situation. In this case, people were more ionate than Sakurai expected, and Sakurai didn’t like how they were ionate. Now, if you don’t like the Melee community for that, that’s fine. I can sort of understand that. However, you have to consider 2 things. During an EVO charity drive, Melee raised ~$100k to get Melee a spot at EVO. 2 days before EVO, Nintendo told EVO the couldn’t stream Melee, and only backed down after getting backlash. Seems like a much bigger “fuck you” than being more ionate than a game dev intended. Another example is Brawl. A game designed to alienate the competitive audience/bridge the gap between competitive and casual players. Now, I’m very appreciative that Nintendo is no longer like this, but I hate hearing people who act like Melee players were these awful people for playing competitively against Nintendo’s will but somehow not care at all when Nintendo tried to shut us down after we raised $100k for cancer research. Enough about disrespect, let’s talk about mechanics. Whether or not the mechanics of Melee are glitches is irrelevant, as these mechanics have a ton of arguments in favor of them being amazing mechanics. And… Melee is too fast for you is a reason to hate Melee? I understand your personal preference being against Melee because of this, but the way he phrases it makes it sound like he feels this is an objective flaw, which is hella wack.

Roster size becomes more irrelevant when the gameplay allows for new and fresh combos/interactions to happen all the time. All of Melee is like this, while the newer games can become more stale in this regard. There definitely are still cool combos, but they may not happen nearly as often. And, please, enlighten me in regards to what the ONE “glitch” (friendly reminder that wavedashing, L-Cancelling, etc. aren’t glitched :)))) thanks) that makes Melee competitive is, cause I don’t believe I’ve heard of that one. Whether or not Brawl and Ultimate are better is entirely subjective, you can’t just say “it’s new and better lol” and give no evidence aside from that. The community does have some toxic folks, but if you’re good at avoiding and/or dealing with toxic people you should be a-okay friendo. Next up we have someone on the comment section of “Is Melee HD a bad idea?”

This person, while they do have more sense than most people I see, still have a said a couple ignorant statements here. They were bringing up the typical, “Melee has too many glitches!” argument. Fun fact friday; Wavedashing was noticed during development and left in, L-Cancelling was intentional, etc. Melee’s glitches seriously aren’t that bad though. The most prevalent one I could think of is wobbling, which has been banned a The Big House 9. I will it that there are some other negative glitches/mechanics like GnW’s lack of L-Cancelling, Planking, and more. I believe that the positive glitches outweigh the negative ones by a significant margin. Thankfully, this person realizes something most don’t. It doesn’t matter whether or not wavedashing is a glitch, because wavedashing is awesome. Tech like that adds a ton of depth to the game. One thing that really pisses me off is that people seem to associate this negativity to the word glitch, saying that just because something is a glitch that means it’s bad. You’re telling me that if Sakurai came out and said the freeze glitch was intentional, the freeze glitch is now a good mechanic? Hell no, that shit still sucks and will never be legal in tournaments. My point is you can’t just write off things like wavedashing as a “game-breaking glitch” without even taking the quickest glance at how wavedashing affects Melee. This person’s second argument is that Melee is “absolutely imbalanced”. Before I disprove this positive abomination of an argument, here’s a bunch of other people saying that Melee is unbalanced and dominated by Fox (taken from various posts).

S4 PGRv1’s top ten players had 11 characters represented (including secondaries), PGRv2 had 14, and PGRv5 had 16. MIOM in 2017 had 13, and 2018 had 11. For a game with literally double the characters, Sm4sh’s numbers aren’t too much higher than Melee. Even if Sm4sh’s numbers towered over Melee’s, character diversity doesn’t mean shit when Melee has gameplay diversity. Outside of some outliers, characters in Sm4sh don’t really have a ton of leeway in how they can be played, whereas in Melee you can watch different top Falcos or Marths play and distinguish who you’re watching from playstyle alone. I will say that Ultimate did a better job of this than S4 imo. Next up we have this person;

All memes aside, if you think tech skill can be summed up as “issues”, your opinions are literally not respected anymore. You’re really reaching at that point. So you should obviously fix your issues surrounding a lack of understanding of the depth that most Melee tech-skill adds. Which includes doing some research to have a better understanding of them all.

You feel almost as uninformed as all these other comments, to be honest.

“I’ve only played Melee once...”

Soooo, you it you don’t have any experience? How tf is that even an argument? You’re literally itting to not knowing what you’re talking about. Additionally, you don’t need to call a group of people buffoons because you have a different preference regarding video games. Yeah, maybe Nintendo might not be super appreciative of these mechanics, but that doesn’t mean they’re objectively bad. Seriously, this guy is the reason why people who hate Melee can be more annoying than the few Melee Elitists that are still around. He followed up that comment with this;

Here he kind of assumes that I’m trying to start something because I have more experience playing the game, so I’ve got two fun facts for that argument. Fun fact 1; I’ve never played Melee. I’m an Ultimate player. Fun fact 2; He commented “Melee is a buggy trainwreck” before I said anything at all lol. In no way did I start something. Of course I don’t have something against non-Melee players. I do have something against you if you’re going to call people names and act like you know things you don’t. He then tries to insult Melee by saying “Speed =/= Good”. Guess what? Speed =/= bad either. If you don’t like Melee because of the speed, that’s cool! I’ve got no problem with that. Just don’t act like Melee is objectively bad because of its speed. He then just tries to... insult me for inactivity or a lack of hygiene associated with gamers? Because why bring up actual arguments when you could make baseless personal attacks like a complete dolt?

I’ll end the comments with one last fun fact; if you are as toxic as this person, you are a problem, and I dislike you as a person.

I genuinely don’t even want to read the comment section on Melee blogs anymore. It’s straight up not fun. The amount of ignorance there is a pain in the ass. If you’re someone who’s guilty of the things mentioned in his blog, please stop talking about Melee if you’ve got barely any experience with it. It’s honestly obnoxious and it makes SBA a wayyyy less fun place to be on.

This has been 2Bands, as always, I hope you enjoyed. The Overwatch x Smash blog is currently being worked on but it’s taking a REALLY long time, so there’s a chance I’ll push out a couple smaller blogs before that one gets finished. I’m doing my best to get posts out before I start high school.
