Eight different travelers...
Eight different stories...
Now how about Smash?
Hello Smash Amino, today I'm back for Fan Fighter Clash 2! Last time, I didn't take it very seriously with my Peter Griffin moveset, so this time I made an ACTUAL moveset! This time for one of my favorite games, Octopath Traveler! For those unaware, Octopath Traveler is a JRPG with 8 main characters, each a different class.
-There's Olberic the warrior
-Tressa the merchant
-Cyrus the scholar
-Ophelia the cleric
-H'aanit the hunter
-Therion the thief
-Alfyn the apothecary
-And Primrose the dancer.
Now here's a question: If there are 8 main characters, which one will I be making a moveset for? Well, that's simple.
All of them!
Yep. All 8 of them, combined into one fighter! Now here's an obvious question: How? How can a character be 8 characters combined? I'm not taking the Pokemon Trainer approach and just making 8 movesets and having you switch between them. Instead, different characters will appear for different moves. For example, one move uses Therion, another uses H'aanit, and so on. I'll go more in depth as we go on, so for now lets start with this moveset!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Movement:
Before we dive into this moveset, I will first establish this character's movement, along with getting there stats (weight, height, speed, etc) out of the way as well.
When Octopath Traveler (which is this fighter's name, and from now on I'll abbreviate that as "OT") isn't attacking and is running around and jumping, it will be Olberic who will be doing it. Olberic is the tallest of the 8, but I chose him because favorite character privilege :P
Ahem, anyways, back to movement! OT has no crawl but does have a wall cling (Therion will be the one who does it, not Olberic). Before we go into stats, I'll quickly address that when OT transforms into a different character, hurtbox size will not be significantly affected. If OT is a character besides Olberic and is launched, they will be launched as that character until touching the ground or using any move and will revert back to Olberic. Here are OT's stats:
Height: Same as Snake's
Weight: Same as Samus's
Run speed: Same as Ganon's
Walk speed: Same as Mario's
Air speed: Same as Villager's
Fall speed: Same as DK's
Okay, lets go into some moves now!
Jab:
A simple gentleman jab. Olberic throws a quick left hook for 3%, a right hook for another 3%, and a powerful kick to push away the opponent for 6%. That's 12% total. It's a fast move and acts as a quick option for when the opponent gets too close in your face, just like any other gentleman jab.
Tilts:
OT's forward tilt will have Alfyn swing his axe. The range is moderate, and it deals 10% but isn't very fast. It is a kill move, killing at 140% near the ledge.
Up tilt will have Cyrus summon a small explosion of fire above his head, dealing 7%. Its a decent anti air, only affecting anyone above Cyrus's head. It's fairly quick and can lead into itself for some extra damage. Will kill at around 160%.
Down tilt will be a very quick, crouched knife stab from Therion. It isn't very strong, dealing just 5%, and it has little range, but due to its swiftness it can be used nearly immediately after for another hit. There's also a 30% chance it will trip an opponent from 1-75%.
Aerials:
Forward air is a ranged attack, having H'aanit shoot an arrow from her bow. It works very similarly to Villager's forward air, with the move being stronger the closer the opponent is to OT. It deals 10% up close, and far away it deals just 4%. Its good for edgegaurds and for neutral.
Up air is a mighty sword swing from Olberic, much like Ike's up air. It deals 15%, has wide range, kills, and can juggle opponents.
Back air is a swift kick from Primrose. It's a weak move, dealing 7%, but it is really fast and safe on shield. Also not a bad OoS (out of shield) option.
Neural air is Ophelia using her staff to summon a large ball of light magic to shield her. It's a multi-hit move, dealing 11% if all the hits connect, fast, and lasts a long time.
Down air has Tressa take off her heavy backpack and slam it downwards! Obviously, it's a spike, and a very strong one at that. It has lots of start up, so be careful. Its also a very powerful move when it doesn't spike, killing at 120%!
Smash Attacks:
Forward smash is Olberic, take a guess, swinging his sword above his head. Yeah, its basically Ike/Ganon forward smash but hey coming up with smash attacks for a big beefy guy with a huge sword is hard. Deals 25% uncharged, deals 39% at max charge. Obviously, it's pretty slow but has great range and is a dist. Kills at around 70% near ledge.
Up smash is Tressa tossing coins from her pockets up into the skies! It doesn't hit opponents next to her, only those above her. The coins themselves go above Tressa's head and deal 15% uncharged, 26% at max charge. It's a very quick move, but lacks power, killing at around 140%.
Down smash has Alfyn concoct an explosive mixture, then slam his bottle to the ground, causing an explosion! It has moderate speed, deals 20% uncharged and 32% at max charge. Kills at around 135%.
Grab and Throws
OT's grab is a simple one. Olberic just reaches at his opponent in an attempt to grab them. Pummel is just a kick to the torso, nothing special. Pummel deals 1.3% per hit.
Down throw is of course a combo throw, reliably leading into forward air strings until around 50%. It can lead into up air if the opponent DIs into you, and in that case an up air can be used until 70%. Down throw itself does 9%. Down throw into up air can be a kill confirm if you can get a hard read on the opponent.
Up throw has Alfyn and Therion lifting the opponent up and tossing them into the air! It does 10%. It can lead into up air until around 60%, making it a nice combo throw. It can kill at extreme percents like 200%, but that isn't extremely helpful for hopefully obvious reasons.
Forward throw is Primrose stabbing the opponent with her knife, then using it to toss them away! It's a weak forward throw, with its strength very similar to that of Marth/Lucina's forward throw. It does 7%, and isn't a reliable kill throw even at extreme percents. Just a quick option to get an opponent away from you.
Back throw has Ophelia use her staff-which the opponent is holding onto-to fling the opponent behind her. It's a strong kill throw, killing at 130% near ledge. For a cleric, she's got muscle!
So those are the basic moves, and as you can see, it's a pretty mixed bag of moves. Quick moves, slow moves, ranged ones, powerful ones, and so on. Why is it so inconsistent, you may ask? Well that's because just like in a JRPG, every character is very different from one another, and its up to the player to use each character to benefit another one to be as efficient as possible! We haven't gone over specials yet, but before we get to that, I haven't revealed OT's gimmick yet! (As if being 8 characters wasn't enough of a gimmick) Ladies and gentleman, I present to you...
Boosting!
Just like in Octopath Traveler, there's a separate boost gauge. You can obtain boost crystals, and when used, significantly increase your power! In Octopath Traveler, you would attack more than once, but in this Smash moveset, the power and knockback are multiplied!
One boost crystal means the power and knockback are doubled, two makes it tripled, and three makes it quadrupled! Now before you write this off as just a stupid OP mechanic, let me explain how you obtain boost crystals. Your gauge represents your BP (your amount of boost crystals), and it can hold a max of five BP. Now in order to get BP, you have to wait for the gauge to slowly fill up. It fills up faster if you attack someone or get attacked, much like Cloud's Limit or Joker's Arsene. You can decide whenever to use your BP up with neutral special, and speaking of specials, let's go over those!
Specials:
OT's neutral special is called Boost, and when used, depletes your boost gauge. When boosted, your next move will deal the multiplied damage and knockback added from boosting, including throws. Use this to your advantage and rack up some percent!
Side special is called Linde Charge. H'aanit will ride on her trusted snow leopard companion Linde and crash into her foes! It does 13% on impact, and can be jumped out of, making it good for recovering as well. You can jump out as soon as you hit someone too, so try and get some sweet follow ups while your at it. If Linde hits someone, she doesn't stop and will keep running. This special has some great utility, so try and experiment a little!
Up special is called Team Boost, and will have Olberic leap off of the shoulders of any of the other (the party member chosen is completely random and purely cosmetic). It has a hit box, and is stronger at the start of the move. The sweet spot at the start does 12%, and the sour spot does 5%. Olberic's trajectory can be changed depending on what direction the control stick is held. If it's held more to the side, then Olberic will travel much farther horizontally. If you just hold up, then he'll go much farther vertically. The distance is about as much as Diddy's rocket barrels.
Down special is called Concoct. Alfyn will concoct a potion in the midst of battle, and then unleash it on his enemies! It's a chargeable special, and the longer it's charged for determines what kind of potion Alfyn concocts. When the player is contempt with what kind of potion Alfyn had charged, by pressing b again, he will slam it onto the ground. It's much larger than OT's down smash range, too. When at max charge, Alfyn can move around and choose when to use it. It can be used in midair, but it is much weaker. Alfyn can cancel the charge at any time by shielding, and then resume his work at any time. I'll list every concoction, their effects, and how long it takes to make it.
-Weakest one is >2.5 seconds. A small blast that just deals 5%
-2.5 seconds to 4.9 seconds is an icy blast a that freezes opponents at higher percentages. Does 10%
-5 seconds to 6.9 seconds does 16%, breaks shields, and has a small chance of putting the opponent to sleep
-7 seconds to 9 seconds does 22%, heals Alfyn by 15%, and has a small chance of dizzying the opponent
Final Smash
OT's Final Smash is called Divine Teamwork! Olberic will swing his sword in front of him, and anyone caught in it will be transported into a cutscene. In said cutscene, all eight characters will use their divine skills from Octopath Traveler (any character with a ing divine skill rather than an offensive one will just use it on someone with an offensive one), and then four characters (those characters being randomized) will use the divine skill of the four hidden classes! (Sorcerer, Runelord, Warmaster, and Starseer) After the dust is settled, 70% is dealt and your opponent will most likely die.
Now that we've discussed all the moves, lets go over some strengths and weaknesses.
Strengths and Weaknesses
OT is a character who has a lot of utility. OT has all types of moves, fast moves, ranged moves, large moves, slow moves, and so on. Proper utilization of all these types of attacks is key, and when mastered, OT becomes an unpredictable and scary opponent. Add on some boosting and OT becomes even scarier, quadruple damage and knockback can make anyone shiver! However, OT isn't perfect. A jack of all trades is a master of none, so while OT can do nearly everything, it can't do it as well as other characters can. OT also isn't the fastest character, and that can hurt it sometimes. OT also has problems killing without boosting, since it only has a few reliable kill moves that are all pretty slow. Olberic has a big body and OT has mediocre landing options, making disadvantage or being juggled a problem. Without boosts, it's hard to do much with OT, but boosting is what makes it so scary.
Playstyle
Like I mentioned earlier, OT plays like a JRPG. You have all these characters that focus n different things, and yet when combining those attributes properly, you become unstoppable! OT is already unpredictable, but who knows what it'll do with a full boost gauge? OT's main goal is to get BP and deal massive damage and kill stupid early. Combine that with the fact that OT can boost at literally any time and you've got a scary character. Without BP, OT can struggle to be productive, but just like in Octopath Traveler, boosting properly leads to victory.
Why Smash could use an Octopath Traveler rep
Octopath Traveler is an incredible game for Switch, and has done really well financially too. There are so many ideas for translating all these characters into Smash, and I'm definitely not the only one to take a crack at making a move set based off of it. A character like OT or any other ideas for an Octopath Traveler character would be such a fresh and unique character, and really embody what made Octopath Traveler so special: its characters.
I mean Therion is the best character of the eight, character wise and battle wise
Reply to: Aether
Therion's skills are great for ing himself. But at the late game, get ready to see some high damage numbers with Olberic. Especially if you hunt down the hidden classes.
What secondary class did you assign for Olberic though?
Reply to: Aether
Warmaster once I got it.
