Smash Switch: Thoughts, Implications, and Analysis

What’s up?

I know, I know, you’re probably still in shock from all of what’s happening right now. For those of you devoid of any social interaction with smash players (wait, isn’t that what this app is for?) that didn’t hear the news, the end of the 3/8/2018 Nintendo direct left us smashers with a little surprise for what’s to come

If you’re too lazy to watch it, basically it’s the inklings fighting and then they see a smash ball and then there’s a couple dimly lit characters shown and then it says 2018 and then woohoo happy happy. But, what does any of this actually mean?

Port or new Game?

So, with very little defined, it’s kind of hard to say what Smash Switch will entail for us. Will it be a new game (Smash 5, as many hungry players have already chosen to call it), a port of Smash 4, or something else entirely?

Since the inklings were the only ‘new’ characters explicitly shown, I think it’s safe to assume that at the very least it’ll be a “deluxe port” of the game.

With the release date being in 2018, I am a little bit skeptical of this being an entirely new game. It’s not easy to just whip up a new physics engine and put in 50+ characters for any game, much less one as intricate as Smash.

It’s also kind of worth noting that back in mid 2017 we saw a small game update in Smash 4 that changed all of the file types into a development model, so something tells me they’re gonna be ripping a lot straight from Smash 4.

Basically, I don’t think we should start running around saying we’re getting a “new smash” because all the evidence points toward this being a port.

Now obviously, the Inklings are all but confirmed for the game. But there’s another character I’d like to focus on here...

I don’t know about all of you, but I would REALLY love this in Smash Switch. Even though it might just be an alternate costume for link, I still have hope that it’ll be a brand new character.

Mario?

They also showed mario, who looked fairly similar to his Odyssey art style. While I don’t think he’s gonna be a new character, I could definitely see a different move or two utilizing the hat. That would be super cool to see.

An Arms character seems like a very logical choice to add to the game as DLC in a port, since it’s Nintendo’s latest and greatest IP. It seems like he would be a cool character too. Can you imagine the range?

Okay, so this is something really weighing down on my mind right now. Assuming this is a deluxe style port, are we going to see potential buffs to low tier characters, and more importantly, a nerf to select top tiers?

In my opinion, there will probably be some select changes to certain characters, but I have a feeling that Sakurai wants to preserve this game how it is for the most part.

Not gonna lie though, I wouldn’t exactly mind some small tweeks to a certain character...

Now, some of you may have realized that ZeRo did say he would come back if a new smash game or rendition came out in the future.

Will he come back, even if it’s a port? Will he just continue stay away from the competition of the game? It’s all up in the air at this point, but I at least wanted to post the question to you guys.
