Why no items?

I've noticed lots of people I play against and Youtubers I watch, tend to always play with no items. But why? I have had plenty of fun moments with items on, plus I recently had a match with soccer balls only against a friend (You know who you are) ;) anyways, I'm just curious....I'm sure there's an extremely obvious answer I'm not seeing...

Items are turned off because of the randomness and unfairness that they present, as well as that they distract players from actually fighting each other.
