“No!” Traxos cried out as he ran past her, throwing himself at the ice sheet. “No! Don’t leave me here!”
Katyra had slowed to a walk, and stood back as Traxos kept hitting the ice, as if trying to break it. “Traxos, calm down,” She called out to him, “They won’t leave us here.”
She wasn’t entirely sure where this sense of calm had come from, but she was willing to enjoy the peace for a few more moments. Looking down, she opened her hand to see the blue crystal still there, pulsating in her palm. Katyra tucked it into another pocket, separate from the red crystal.
“Please don’t leave,” Traxos sobbed, sinking to the ground with one hand still pressed against the ice. Katyra looked up, knowing exactly what needed to be done. The ice wouldn’t break with physical strikes, but with Force-augmented strength…
She hesitated, recalling the vision she’d had while unconscious. Sure, Q’taran might not try to strike her down, but she knew that Traxos wouldn’t tell the others of her Dark use – Q’taran, however, just might take that info straight back to the Council.
“Traxos, it’s okay,” Katyra told him, moving to his side. They could see blurred figures on the other side, pres against the ice, and put a hand on Traxos’s shoulder.
“Move back!” She called out, gesturing with her arms to the rest of the group. “Get out of the way!”
They seemed to listen, and she could have sworn she saw Q’taran grab someone and pull them away from the ice. She looked at Traxos as she pulled him to his feet, while looking around for something heavy enough.
A small boulder stood nearby, and Katyra focused on it, using the Light to gauge the weight and fixedness of the stone. It was far too heavy for her to lift with Light, but with Dark…
Could she do it? Could she follow what her vision had shown her?
It was either that or stay here for another rotation. Katyra decided she’d take her chances.
“Use your sense,” she told Traxos, “Tell me when everyone is away from the doorway.”
Traxos looked at her. “What are you gonna do?”
“I’m gonna get us out of here,” she replied. /Even if it ends my life as a Jedi./
She focused, drawing on the Force – both Light and Dark – and lifting the boulder. Traxos stared at her, eyes wide, before he turned back to the doorway, making sure everyone was out of the way.
Katyra flung the boulder towards the doorway at a dangerous speed. The stone smashed through the ice wall, shattering it with a resounding crash, and the sound of ice shards falling to the ground rang in the hall, almost deafening to the group.
Traxos looked back as Katyra stumbled, catching herself against the wall. For a moment, he felt worried that she might have overdone it, but before he could react Q’taran was racing past him, reaching for the smaller girl.
“That was so incredibly stupid of you!” He chided, “What were you thinking, throwing something that heavy? Even with the Force, we have our limits,”
Traxos looked around to see Kendra and Cjarxin as they ed him, then back at Katyra. She looked up at Q’taran, taking a deep breath.
“We couldn’t stay stuck here for a rotation,” she replied in a small voice, “Or else we’d die. We had to get out somehow.”
“We need to get out of here anyway,” Q’taran told her, grabbing her arm gently. Katyra didn’t struggle as he turned back to the rest of the group. “Something is wrong. Very wrong. Everyone get back to the ship; we can celebrate there.”
Traxos stared at Q’taran, before he reached out and sensed around Katyra. She had – amazingly – seemed to surround herself with Light, as if banishing the Dark side from her completely. How could she do that?
He wasted no time in following Q’taran’s orders, following the rest of the group back out to the ship. By the time they had returned, however, Katyra seemed much more lively than in the tunnel. Even as Q’taran attempted to fuss over her, she shoved him away.
“I’m fine,” she reassured everyone, “I just overexerted myself. Some rest and I’ll be fine.”
Traxos wondered if that was the truth – or if the truth was something more sinister.
