Art Lesson (?) with Centipeetle!

Step 1: Sketch/Line Art

It is very important to get this part of the drawing correct before you move on to the next :0

If you don't, you may notice flaws later, which can hurt a design

There is no shame in using reference photos! Try reflecting the image to find errors! Sometimes I wait a few hours until I look at it again, so my brain doesn't get used to how it looks (which can mean accidentally not noticing errors)

Step 2: Base colors

I used colors directly from the show. Just make a new layer, and color beneath the lines

Step 3: Light Source + Highlights

This stage is very important and will affect everything about the drawing

Choose the primary source of light. Playing with the color and intensity will give the art different different emotions and such. Bright yellow can reflect a warm scene, red can be hot or evil, blue can be sad, etc.

Colors also should be based on what background you choose

I use a new layer above the others and use the "screen" filter, creating the highlights based on the color of light I choose.

Be careful with this. Sometimes "screen" doesn't work well on lighter base colors (like the fur)

Also, notice how I made the background a midtone gray. This helps with getting values more accurate so they aren't too bright or dark

Dimmer blue light

More intense, yellow-ish light

Step 4: Shadows

Essentially do the same thing with highlight, but make it dark and opposite to the light source. If the light source is close to white light, then I just use darker version of the base color

Make a new layer above the base color, but below the highlight, and set it to "multiply." Typically, don't use black. Use a color similar to the base color. Don't be afraid of going semi dark. You want a good range of values!

Reflecting light (extra)

So light reflects a little off of the ground, so you can use this in your shading too. It can also soften harsh shadows.

Go back to your Highlight "screen" layer. Using a color similar to that of the ground, add some faint highlights towards the direction of the ground

Kind of hard to tell, but I use a blue-gray ish color

Step 5: TEXTURE

Texture is VERY important in differentiating materials, and well, texture of a surface! This can include fur, scuffs and scratches, dirt, rust, etc.

Fur

I've heard from some people asking how I do fur. On the app I use (Sketch Club), there is a brush called "fur" that I like using. It's basically a brush that adds adjacent, faint lines to try to make it look more furry.

Make a new layer above all the others, no filter. Use brush to add the dark under layers first, and to establish the direction, flow, and length of the fur. Keep in mine to try to make clumps of fur instead of individual strands. After wards, I go back and add light strands. Rinse and repeat until you like it. Play with it too! Add waves, turn the direction of the fur, adjust length, etc.

Other texture

Break up the boring surface. I use various brushes like specs and such to try to. On the legs I added some nubs and spikes. The rest I got a little lazy and did specs.

I make this on a separate layer from the fur

Afterwards, add as much more detail as you'd like. Some of the shading might've been lost due to the texture layers, but just repeat the shadow and highlight steps on new layers above it. Clean up the art, and you're done!

LAST TIP:

Sometimes it's hard to know when to call a drawing done. I usually spend a few hours on mine, so if you /think/ it's done, wait a little while

:sparkles: :sparkles: IF YOU WANT MORE ART STUFF, I highly recommend checking out this Link (not mine). It's very informative, albeit lengthy and sometimes complicated, but you can definitely learn stuff from more of a pro, because I am NOT a pro

So this was my attempt at a quick lesson. I didn't know how in depth to go to be honest, but oh well :joy: :joy: feel free to leave any suggestions for future things if I do them. I didn't try too hard on this.

Also terrible quality due to Amino :^)

"add the base colors on layer below the drawing" wow. How smart. I do that all the time!

I know some people that use the fill tool right in the lines and I'm like "plz no don't do that" plus most of the time I erase lines later

I only say it as a disclaimer because who knows if some of these tips are correct at all. That and I've never had any formal training or education :joy:
