So this was it

Hematite looked around at the once beautiful field, that was now nothing more than an ugly display of war. What looked like miles upon miles of gem shards reaped her eyes and her emotion; she wanted to look away, but she couldn't.

The small gem took a moment to what she was here to do. She was here to escape, and escape was what she was going to do. She thought for a moment, thinking of the side she was currently on. The image of her fellow soldiers seemed to bring sadness upon her. The thought of them having to remain and fight until their inevitable deaths made her eyes swell with tears.

But it's okay

The words seemed to relieve Hematite, if only slightly. Soon she would be free, and she would not have to worry about anything. She took a deep breath and took another step.

And another.

And--

"Where are you going?"

The voice seemed to stab her and keep her frozen in place. She could not move. She could not answer. Fear bubbled up inside her. What was she to do? Tell the truth lie her way out of it?

"To freedom."

The words fell out of Hematite's mouth easier than she expected. She felt the gem behind her go silent. Slowly, she turned around and faced the blue gem in the eye.

Both gems stared at each other, silent. Thinking opposite things. One thought of freedom. The other thought of war. They continued to meet each other's gaze, until one spoke.

"See you."

The blue gem's eyes filled with tears as he waved goodbye to the other gem. Hematite waved back.

And slowly, she took her steps into freedom.
