Garnet Costume - Stage 2

Continuing from my previous post, Garnet Costume - Stage 1.

When we last left our hero (me), we had acquired glasses to use with the store-bought costume already owned. Still to do at that point:

• Wig

• Gems

• Footwear

And I also have a little surprise for when it's all put together. :blush:

Today: WIG.

I bought a curly black wig as I am straight-haired and blond.

Now, initially I wanted to make some kind of pillow shaped like Garnet's hair because it really does not look or behave much like hair in the show. But I am not so good at sewing and do not trust my skills to attach it to my head comfortably, so I decided it'd be better to buy something designed to go on your head and modify it.

The curls on this wig were tight spirals that I knew were too distinct to be expected to take any sculpting, so I set about poofing them out.

I used a brush toward the beginning, but it seemed to be stretching and damaging the synthetic hair a bit, so I mostly used my fingers to separate curls and tease them into fluff.

It took me like 4 days.

I was wig-fluffing while listening to podcasts, watching TV, hanging out with friends, talking on the phone. At the end, I had this.

Which as you can see will not do for Garnet hair as is.

So I jammed it into a box.

And then went after it with hairspray.

It kind of worked, at least at first.

I attempted to tie a string around it to create the bread loaf shape Garnet's hair usually has, but it wasn't a distinct enough shape to take that. Dang.

The wig wasn't staying in a square shape well at all, so...I decided to iron it!

First I spread a pillowcase on the floor, put the wig on it, put another pillowcase on top, and squished it with my cutting board.

And then, you know. Awkwardly ironed it over a pillowcase.

For the sides, I pressed the side of the wig against the cutting board...

And ironed. Sideways over a pillowcase. Carefully.

I then shoved it back in the box and used straight-up spray glue instead of hairspray. And tried the ribbon again.

I'm afraid the ribbon still didn't really do anything, but at least now I have relatively square hair.

But it's pretty loose, has a couple stray curls, and becomes less cohesive over time. I'm sad it didn't really come out how I wanted, but for an amateur cosplay I guess it's all right!

I am not going to show you the whole outfit yet because it's not done, but for now how about a bunch of wig pics, featuring me trying to kinda look like Garnet?
