Jasper and the Snow Monster

Sometimes people make jokes about fusion dances being mostly abandoned even though they’d been introduced as a seemingly essential aspect of fusion.

But the purpose of the dance is to get in sync with the fusion partner(s) on every level–physical, mental, “magical,” whatever. There are plenty of ways to achieve a shared vibe, and the show features many of them over its lifetime.

One fusion I’ve seen questioned the most is between Jasper and the snow monster in the Beta Kindergarten. How could she even get consent with such a creature? How could they be in sync?

Well, to answer that, look at them.

Jasper observed the monster’s goal and rushed in to help.

She saw that it wanted freedom and aligned herself with its goal.

Gems who are having the same thoughts, aligning with the same goal, have already been shown to be capable of fusion even if neither is exactly willing it. We saw Steven and Connie do it when they had no idea they could, and they fused accidentally onscreen more times than they fused on purpose. Ruby and Sapphire’s first fusion was also accidental. And in “Change Your Mind” we even see Steven fuse with inert Gems, presumably because he knows they would be aligned with his goal and something inside them responded to that.

Jasper recognizing the single-minded desire of this monster and showing it her dedication to the same cause through physically contributing to its freedom was very shrewd of her. (And it would have been a genius move if fusing with a corrupted Gem hadn’t turned out to lead to corruption for her.)
