Hello humans and gems! Today I come to you with a brand new redesign of an oc I was quite proud of in the past, my Red Pearl!

She already went through a redesign in the past but it's getting pretty old, and since I got better at drawing since then I thought I'd bring her back to life!

The purpose of this post is to show how my art in particular progressed and critique older versions, finding the problems and seeing how I fixed them as well as commentating on design changes and explaining them! Of course there is also the fact that I'm presenting the brand new design, and a new, revisited and revised wiki will see the light of day soon.

Yikes.

(5th August 2018)

-I was really happy with the design back then, and while I may have a more critical eye on my work now, the post presenting her and her story was featured and got a lot of positive comments! Good idea of design, bad art.

-Now, I have had this major issue which I still have a problem with to this day. Some artists struggle with drawing hands, I CANNOT DRAW LEGS. I've always had an issue with them proportion wise and it shows way too much in this picture, I made her stand really awkwardly to camouflage as much of her other leg as I possibly could so that I wouldn't have to spend hours trying to make it look right.

-I can definetly see mistakes I've made on a lot of other drawings, most notably her elongated neck, it's like a giraffe, her shoulders are very round and way too "detached" to the rest of the arm. She has a very thin waist and an overly huge butt compared to the rest of the body.

-Other things I could point out would be some pretty ugly shading, lack of details, her hair look like it's just plastic on her head, like a helmet like Yellow Diamond's.

I just don't know what came through my head when I thought this looked great to actually post for the world to see.. Not that it's THAT hideous, it's just that I don't feel it's good enough to replace the first version.

-What got better at that point was the shading, I no longer used straight clean lines and started to blurr to make it look more smooth.

-Her legs look better than before and she doesn't have that awkward way of standing, thank god. She's got more details in her design, I didn't change much because I still really liked the concept of the first version.

-Somehow she still has this giraffe neck, her shoulders are still a bit too big and noticeable, and her butt... Dear god, IT'S HUGE. And the worst part is that while her butt is bigger, her waist got even thinner!! It's pretty cringe worthy for me to look at honestly but hey I promise I learned from those mistakes and I'm careful with waists now..

-There has been a lot more changes to this one, probably because of how long it had been since the last drawing it really left me some time to get better and progress in my art style.

-The shading I more discreet compared to the last drawing, her body is more proportional, she's actually quite thicc for a pearl now, she has a decent butt and thunder thighs.

-When it comes to the design, the one thing that stayed throughout all the three versions of Red Pearl are the flames of her outfit, it's something I wanted to keep because it represented the ion that this Red Pearl can show in the heat of battle (>v>). Her thighs are showing more than in the previous versions where her stockings her very high up, and now she had patterns on her skin and those on her hands make it look like she has gloves.

-Her gem actually switched to the other eye, it's not something I've thought about until later when the line art was already done so I didn't want to go back, and besides since I'm used to drawing my characters with angle to their right this placement is better so that we can get a better look at her only eye.

-Her hair is less like a frigid block, it has some wild strands here and there too! And I'm noticing that I went from a red skin to pale skin and then back to red, it's because I felt like the paler red was straying a bit too much from the gem colour scheme.

I'm very happy with the ending result, it was honestly worth the time it took and the many tries to get the design right. She's looks like she had this flaming determination, this fierce aspect that I wanted to go for. Here are some more shots with background and weapon, her reference sheet and proof!

Being able to critique your own work and managing to find the mistakes you've made I think is a good thing that makes you see how much you've progressed as an artist!
