Erm, awkward but....

Try this yourself: google “Rose Quartz Cosplay” and switch to images.

I’m not including any images because I don’t want anyone to think I’m shaming them, but...you might notice looking through the Rose cosplays that a surprising number of the cosplayers designed their Rose costumes with a yellow star on the dress, with the Gem placed on top of it.

Like, a really, really large number of cosplayers chose this variation.

It’s totally fine to cosplay a character however you like, of course! But I think the sheer number of people who put a gold or yellow star on their dresses suggests that at least some of them are not doing this as a creative tweak; they’re doing it because they think the character’s star shape is a yellow star, like Steven’s shirt.

It is not.

The star shape around her Gem is a cutout to expose her Gem. Which does not work very well in real life because the material doesn’t stay star-shaped and flops around and looks weird–it is in fact better to put a star the color of your skin on the dress and put the Gem on top of that.

Again, I want to emphasize that if someone just likes that idea to jazz up their costume or wants it to reflect a connection to Steven, they’re fully within their rights to do that, just as they can make any other changes to a cosplay that they want to and have no obligation to keep their cosplay accurate to the character design!

But if you intend to have a costume that reflects the intended details of Rose Quartz’s design, please don’t misinterpret that as a yellow or gold star. :)

I mean, with a long wire and sewing skills, or even clothing tape, you could make the star stay together.

I mean, if you look at people's cosplay who have tried various solutions for an actual cutout, some are more successful than others but it has a much higher chance of folding, moving off center, creasing, or just not looking very much like a star. I'm not saying it can't be done well. I'm saying if you look at people who have tried, it usually is not done well/comfortably (or it looks fine in a posed picture but not as fine if the person has to move around a convention in it).

Something I’ve noticed about the crystal gem symbol: White Diamond referred to Steven as Starlight, and we can assume she called Pink the same thing. What is the symbol of the Crystal Gems? A star.

Coincidence? I think not!

Well, I don't know that Pink would have intentionally preserved a term of endearment from someone she considered abusive, but who knows? The star with 5 points being derived from the outward facing pentagonal facet on her Gem seems to match better thematically for me!
