Screencap Redraw: Garnet Transfixed

For the right here!), the character I requested was Garnet and the screenshot I was assigned was this!

Okay, so full disclosure: I love the episode "Arcade Mania" but Garnet's face in this scene is just :satisfied:

But I didn't wanna bug the challenge author for another choice so I figured yeah I can figure out a way to make this interesting.

So I decided to go beyond just drawing a flat frame of her transfixed by video games...and really try to make you feel like you're watching that game grab her and trap her like it did, erasing everything else she cared about. I made an animation.

A lot of different concepts went into this so let me show you!

First: just a pencil sketch, based heavily on the angle and expression of the screenshot.

I've been weirdly disappointed in my shading lately so I did some preliminary pencil shading to make sure I would like where I laid the shadows down.

Then I did the lines with Copic multiliners and a Copic Special Black, including shadow black for the underside and non-light-facing parts of Garnet's hair.

Then I colored with Copic markers, using colors that were more like what I thought she'd look like in a dark room with one video game screen as a light source. Here's where everything was mostly done besides the background:

When I scanned it, I used my photo editing tools to get a really nice rendering of the colors. But looking at the screenshot, it looked so purple/blue compared to the red light of the original screenshot.

I made a red version too but couldn't decide which I liked better.

Then I did the cool stuff. First, since Garnet's topmost eye flashes rainbow colors in the episode in question, I wanted to make an animation of her eye changing colors. (I did the iris instead of the whole eye. Woohoo artistic interpretation.) I defined the eye area and just shifted the tone with photo editing software, made about 7 different colors of it, and created a GIF from the frames using EZgif utility. I made a red version and a blue version.

But I still felt like...I don't get this feeling like she's really watching a screen covered in rapidly changing visuals! That should be reflected on her whole face, not just one eye.

So I carefully defined the areas of her face, shoulders, neck, chest, and hair that were in the light, excluding the background and parts in shadow. I figured if I just tinted the whole drawing and animated it, it would just look like a GIF effect, not a light effect on an object in space. And I shifted the tint of those areas, and did the animation again.

But!! In my opinion it was still missing something. I still wanted the third eye rainbow changing effect! So I tried one more time, taking each frame from the previous edit and shifting her eye's color into a channel that contrasted with the color of the rest of the frame. And that's it! Done!

I guess I could've done some editing to have her eye moving aroumd a little since she does that a little in the episode, but I didn't think of it.

So that is my entry for #Screenshot2018 which was super fun and made me wanna try more challenges sometime! I almost never enter them. :blush:

Ah and btw the art took about 1.5 hours to draw and I played with the animation part in my free time over the course of the last few days. I finished last night so here it is!
