Steven Universe Theory Response.

I’ve seen this video on YouTube gaining popularity here, and felt like adding in my two cents.

The only thing I can really comment about on this theory is that the scene with Greg and the blue poncho was a gag for the holiday season. The story of Jesus actually follows a common theme in mythological stories called “The Heroic Cycle”, and it’s a cycle I believe this show is definitely following. The basic story structure of this cycle is usually as follows:

1. Birth/Youth. The hero may have two or more of the following: has a magical/special insemination (Human/Gem hybrid formed by “magical” means), has a divine parent (if one could consider Rose godlike), is usually a demi-god (Steven is a half-gem), has a prophecy about them, has an enemy from birth (Homeworld), and shows precociousness (shows skills or qualities beyond their age; Steven’s healing is probably a sign of this).

2. Heroic Journey. This could be argued that this is where Steven is in the show now. This step of the cycle involves a calling (defending Earth from Homeworld), mentors (Garnet/Amethyst/Pearl), helpers (Lapis/Peridot/Connie), an enemy (Homeworld), a Doorway Guardian (which is basically the person/being who determines if/when the hero is ready for their quest/task), and tests/temptations (which are quite honestly all the things we’ve been seeing in the show thus far). This is also usually the most developed section of The Heroic Cycle.

If the truth is that Steven Universe IS in fact following The Heroic Cycle, then this theory is correct in a way, though not for the reason it thinks. The final step in The Heroic Cycle is:

3. Return and Apotheosis. This is basically a fancy way to say that the Hero returns with a gift for humanity, dies, and ascends into godly status to be with their parent/s (usually gods) in the heavens/afterlife.

This motif is found in myths and legends all through the world through all periods of time. Based off of this Cycle, and the path that Steven is currently following, we can assume that the final step of the Cycle is coming. Perhaps Steven will “die” – but only the human half of him. Perhaps, somehow, Steven will “ascend to godhood” and become a full Gem. His “gift” could be peace between Gems and Humans, and his “death” could be a major injury he sustains. With his gem attempting to heal it, the gem half of his DNA could take over, essentially “killing” the human side of Steven and transitioning him to the fully living “godhood” of being a full Gem.

Anyway, that’s my two cents! <3
