Fluorite

“Fluorite is one of the most fascinating minerals. Fluorite is not a rock but a substance occurring in nature that has a solid and inorganic structure.”

Fluorite (also called Fluorspar) is an extraordinary creation of nature: beautiful and luminous, soft and glassy, often vibrant in colour.

Sometimes it can be a colorless crystal, but other times it can also be purple, blue, green, yellow, or pink, or other combinations of these colours.

It can be most commonly found in China, Peru, Brazil, the UK, USA, and Canada.

The word fluorite is derived from the Latin verb fluere, meaning to flow.

This is rather fitting, as the colours of a fluorite seem to flow into each other, and this creates a spectacular soft appearance.

However, Fluorite doesn’t look like this beautifully crafted heart. It looks more like this:

History

The mineral fluorite was originally termed fluorospar and was first noted in print in a 1530 German work by Georgious Agricola – who is dubbed “The Father of Mineralogy”

It was first noted for its ability to be used as a flux (its ability to decrease the thickness of liquid).

Georgious first named it (by mixing both German and Latin) Flußspat:

•Fluß: Stream, River (Flow)

•Spat: Nonmetallic Material.

However, the name fluorite was given in 1852, due to the phenomenon of fluorescence, which occurs due to impurities in the crystal (which gives its crystal projections).

These “impurities” is what also gives fluorite its vibrant colours, and it’s inorganic structure – this creates the appearance of the substance above.

Deeper History

The earliest known fluorite crystals date back thousands of years to Ancient Egypt.

Due to its beauty, and how easy it was to carve the rocks, they often carved fluorite stone into statues, scarabs and vases.

They were also carved into amulets, bowls, cups, dishes, statues and vases by American Indians, Britons, Celts, French, Germans and the Romans.

Goblets and cups made from fluorite stone were believed by the Romans to help prevent intoxication when they drank alcohol from them.

It was apparently so idolised that Ancient Roman rulers were driven to steal it!

• Julius Caesar’s predecessor, had 6 carved fluorite vases stolen from Mithridates and placed in the Jupiter temple.

• The Roman Emperor Augustus had a fluorite vase stolen from its home in the Pharaoh’s palace... just so he could have it!
