DID YOU KNOW?

by: Rere

Hello everyone, today I want to share some facts about Porco Rosso:

1. It was originally planned as a thirty to forty-five minute in-flight movie for Japan Airlines. Director Hayao Miyazaki eventually expanded it into a feature length production.

2. Hayao Miyazaki has stated that he prefers the French language cast (in particular Jean Reno as Porco Rosso) over the Japanese cast.

3. Porco's hideout was inspired by Stiniva beach, a real beach on Vis island in Croatia.

4. Marco Pagot, Porco Rosso's real name, comes from the Pagot family: Nino Pagot and Toni Pagot worked on Italy's first animated feature The Dynamite Brothers (1949), and their sons Gi Pagot and Marco Pagot worked with Hayao Miyazaki on Sherlock Hound (1984).

5. Porco Rosso's plane engine has the brand Ghibli stamped, and although there isn't such an engine, the animation studio's name was taken from an Italian airplane, the Caproni Ca.309 Ghibli, which had double Alfa-Romeo engines.

6. The song that Marco (Porco) is listening to on the radio in the beginning is "Le Temps des cerises" ("Sakuranbo no Minoru Koro" in the original soundtrack), which is the song Gina will sing in a later scene.

7. Porco Rosso is based on manga Hikoutei Jidai (The Age of the Flying Boat) by Hayao Miyazaki, part of Zassou Note series.

8. Most of the story, except when Porco went to Milan, took place in the Adriatic Sea, between Italy and Croatia.Porco lived on an island on the Croatian shoreline (Vis,Stiniva)of the Adriatic Sea. At first, Miyazaki planned to set the story in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Description: Studio Ghibli is one of the most beloved animation studios in the world. Its entire catalog of films, highlighted by the likes of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, holds a special place in many people's hearts. In 2011 the studio broke from its typical work and tried its hand at working on a video game. Now on Game as of September 15, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is a charming JRPG that fits perfectly alongside Ghibli movies in its story of childhood innocence and learning to grow up. TOPIC DISCUSSION

by: Haku

Hi everyone, I hope you are all having a good day. For this month newsletter question is:

What are your top 3 Ghibli movies and why so ?

let's see the answers:

Starlight's answer:

My top 3 Ghibli movies and why : Howl's Moving Castle — It explores the importance of learning self-love and accepting yourself for who you are. It's about finding that inner strength to face whatever challenges lie ahead. And that, no matter how gloomy life may look at one point, things will always work out the way they need to. Also, taking a risk to embark on a new journey might have a rocky start, but without risk there is no reward.

My Neighbour Totoro — This one is a beautiful, rather lighthearted tale that, without fail, always cheers me up. For me, it reinforces the idea that the things we believe in as children can also bring that spark of magic into our daily lives. Believing can be very powerful, especially believing in oneself, no matter how 'childish' those dreams are, they are worth holding on to.

Spirited Away — This one has been with me since childhood, it has a special place in my heart. It shows a bond between two people that, despite time and distance, had persevered and only grown stronger. It shows that challenges don't have to be faced alone, and together you're stronger. And it also emphasizes the importance of staying true to yourself, to not loose yourself in someone else's perception of you.

(It's been a few months since I saw all the Ghibli movies so please excuse any inaccuracy ♡)

Miesumae's answer:

My Top 3 Studio Ghibli movies are:

1. Spirited away, because of the high fantasy and story building behind it. This movie was what really got me into studio Ghibli and I liked that Chihiro wasn't a princess or anything of the sort. Just a normal girl pulled into adventure.

2. Princess Mononoke; the historical setting of the movie along with it's mature tone really made an impression on me. I loved the male lead Ashitaka and how brave and helpful he was especially when he didn't need to be. Also the lore and japanese folklore was represented beautifully. I honestly didn't want the movie to end while watching.

3. Howl's Moving Castle; this movie had me in my feelings for months after watching it no joke. It was such a beautiful mix of comfort and bliss with war and instability, the parallels between Howl and Sophie even more beautiful as the story progressed. The soundtrack for this film is also my favorite and the gentle charismatic personality of Howl goes so well with it. Sophie on the other hand is so humble and diligent which I truly ired and I ended up loving her even more every time I rewatched it.

Blacktea's answer:

#1 The Secret World of Arrietty

I just like stories about tiny people adapting to environments that are way bigger than themselves and see the way they utilize everyday stuff in their own, unique way (pin as a sword, flower pots as part of an oven, a kettle as a boat, etc.) Not to forget the soundtracks which are just awesome. *'The Neglected Garden' plays in background*

#2 Princess Mononoke

A story that teaches you that there is no good or evil, but different perspectives which are sometimes hard to grasp for people who grew up in another environment is just so powerful, I love it. And being raised by wolves is so badass.

#3 My Neighbors the Yamadas

I like this one simply because I watched it with my family and we had a good laugh because we saw ourselves in those everyday scenarios :'D The grandma is still the best character, hands down.

Honorable mentions: Every other Ghibli movie lol

SummmerSami's answer:

#1 Spirited Away: A film opened to a world of wonder and enchantment. To the characters, to the buildings, and the messages behind the film. The true beauty of this world, and the artistry leading behind it. To eerie mysterious characters like No face. Such simplicity in specific detail. Chihiro, a girl who first started as a whiney lazy girl, to a courageous girl with wisdom. As we watch her journey go, experiencing a world we’re unknown to. A world which feels so real, but far from our world. Miyazaki has created a masterpiece of a world, with such creative characters and settings. The upbringing of an fantasy world. Truly a masterpiece of a film, and one of the best films I have ever watched, and truly I have ever experienced In a lifetime

#2 Princess Mononoke: This film truly was a piece of fundamental audacity for the world. Upon to humanity to look up to, in the balance between nature and principles upon how we live in society. A beautiful films with its landscapes and forests, and how Miyazaki pictures a world of distress and torment upon to levels which fit people in those times. The message of peace, and how we should deal with conflict and war. And the wrongdoings and consequences of it. How we should respect nature and our world. And not see ourselves as a superior being, striving to take our needs in a way of compulsion and greed. To the soundtrack, to the setting and meaning. Miyazaki has pictured a true beauty of work for it

#3 My Neighbor Totoro: Truly a beautiful film, of the essence of childhood. We as people have forgotten the meaning and beauty to be a child. The magic, the joy and excitement of running about at ease. Over the trees in the countryside. This is what Miyazaki envisioned, he wanted to tell the children of this world. How they should live there life the fullest upon at there age, and to go outside and live there life. And show adults that life doesn’t need to be lived roughly to be happy. We should take a break and live in peace together :relieved:
