As many of you are probably aware, there has been a lot of people getting messaged by randomly generated s, and it’s caused some confusion.

This announcement is not meant to scare you, but to inform you.

It appears that it’s happening all around Amino, so this applies to other communities as well.

What’s going on?

These generated s are called “bots.” Bots are basically software applications that are programmed to do specific things. They usually appear in the form of another person’s , and some people may not realize that it’s not actually a person.

In this case, these bots are programmed to lure you into clicking a link by advertising inappropriate content. DO NOT CLICK THE LINK! These bots are programmed to hack your device, which could lead to a virus. If you somehow end up clicking the link, there are apps to help protect your device.

These bots all seem to have similar display names - a girl’s name followed by a 5-digit number (for example: Sarah58927). However, please don’t go through the list reporting everyone with a name like that! We don’t want to ban a real person by accident.

What should I do?

If you receive a message like that, go to their profile, and select the ••• button in the top right corner. Select “Flag for Review,” and the mod team will receive a notification to look at their profile. This is preferred over filling the Help Desk chat with profile links, since it’s happening so often.

To prevent yourself from receiving unwanted messages in the future, you can do so in our amino settings. One of our , tutorial on how to disable/limit chat requests. You can either disable them completely, or limit them to just people you’re following. Just so you’re aware, this would prevent bots from messaging you, as well as other people messaging you (limits depending on the setting you choose). Your other option is to simply ignore their message.

i'm not sure if they are able to make posts, but they often send photos and links in chat. these photos may be NSFW, and the links are often not what they say they are, if that helps!
