We here at The Amour Propre Unit stand by the message and importance of self respect. Self respect is very important for every individual. You can not let others hold you down and make you think that you're not worthy of love and compliments.

You have to stand up for what you believe in and stay true to yourself. If others push you too far that your self respect is neglected, do not stay quiet. Fight for yourself. Your self worth is defined by you, not others. You can not let people beat you up till the point where you are not even able to recognize yourself and be what you want to be. Everyone has a right to be themselves and to act according to their morals. If you ever feel like someone is diminishing your self respect, they are toxic for you. You have to raise your voice and speak your truth. Do not back down. And this is exactly what we are going to be making you aware of and familiarizing you with in this blog.

Self-respect: the ability to have confidence and pride in oneself.

It is something that everyone should have within themselves. One may find it easy to possess respect for others, especially those who hold an authoritative figure, but it is essential for one to find their own positive self-image. By obtaining the confidence and love that is needed, one would face an epiphany— a realization that their life does indeed hold value and significance, thus reaching pure content and happiness.

As bad as it sounds, I wasn’t born with a natural respect and love for myself. I struggled with it when I was pushing through adolescence, and truthfully, I still am. The constant self-depreciation, the negative thoughts, and the constant comparisons between myself and others caused me to spiral into a deep well of self-doubt and self-loathing. My daily life would be affected by this negative mindset of mine. For instance, I would prevent myself from meeting friends or challenging myself with academics/extracurriculars that I know would benefit me and help me grow as a person. Of course, I knew for a fact that if I did not change this attitude, I would be in deep trouble. I decided I had to go on a path of change because I was unhappy with the person I was becoming.

To help myself gain some self-confidence, I started shifting my thoughts from a negative light to more positive affirmations. Whenever I would catch myself thinking badly, I would internally scold myself and force myself to think of something more positive. Doing this wasn’t as easy as it sounds, considering the fact that it was almost a natural instinct/reaction to think badly about myself. I also let go of those around me who emit a toxic aura and began surrounding myself with peers who encouraging and optimistic. Something else that significantly helped me was meditating, watching YouTube videos on self-improvement, doing things that I enjoyed, actually getting quality sleep, eating nutritious meals, having self-care days, and spending time with nature.

Self-respect and self-love is so important to me because having this pride and belief in myself overall improved the quality of my life and my experiences. I loved more, cared more, and smiled more. I valued my existence and understood my ions and my purpose. Most days I wake up excited, and it’s a feeling I would never take for granted. I was able to find myself.

I ionately advocate for everyone to take some time out of the day to reflect on their lives: what kind of people they hang out with, what kinds of thoughts they have, and what kind of habits and behaviors they hold. In order to grow an appreciation for oneself, they must first understand themselves. Find the negatives and turn them into positives.

Self respect means knowing when your should give yourself.

You do good on that test you studied really hard for, give yourself credit. Over time I’ve learned when to credit myself and when not too.

Reward yourself with fun things! After a test I’ve studied for I give myself more time on things I love. Like watching more Netflix, playing games and even sleeping in. Think of it like a marking period. make your goal, and work hard. Plan a reward, say if you get 3 A’s you get to treat yourself 3 times to chocolate or something like that. If you don’t reach that goal, reflect on it and find out what you did wrong. But keep working hard.

learn to say no

Don't be pressured or feel obligated to always keep up with the trends or what others are asking you to do because you don't need to. Learn to decline something you don't want to do. Don't allow others to dictate what you should do. It's not only others you need to say no to but sometimes also ourselves when faced with temptation. Learn to distinguish what is right and wrong and think of what may be the effects of your actions. Consider your own feelings and always that you are valid, which means that you can always voice out your thoughts and feelings.

set boundaries

This is related to learning to say no. There are times when we may feel we are being invaded by others which leads us to learning to set boundaries for ourselves. Start by putting limits on certain things about you and being assertive about them. Don't let yourself be dragged around in your relationships may it be friendship, family, or romantic. Be direct when you feel uncomfortable, practice voicing out your thoughts so that others can understand you. You may come ou as sensitive but being able to get your point across is better and I'm sure they would also keep this in mind.

accept your flaws

As we always hear, nobody is perfect. We are all flawed, we all have shortcomings and we make mistakes but these aren't reasons to put ourselves down and blame yourself for all the bad things happening. Rather we should accept these as a part of us and strive to be better. Avoid comparing yourself to others, instead focus on your own goals and how you become a better you and transform into someone else.

When you've accepted yourself, you would be able to acquire more confidence and know how you can become a better version of yourself.

treat others with respect

Treating others with respect will give you a clear view on how to treat yourself the right way. Make showing respect a way of life.

One way that you do this is by refusing to allow others to disrespect you. Just as important is to demonstrate the respectful behavior that you expect by treating others with the utmost respect. When you treat others with respect, they are likely to follow your lead and act in a similar way.

take care of your emotions

Many people normally forget to take care of their emotions, due to stress of living up to society’s expectations. However, taking care of your emotions is the key to seeking respect. By taking care of your emotions, you are allowing yourself to take the time and care for your health.

work on building your confidence

Building your confidence is the key to leading a life with self-respect. Without self-confidence, achieving life would be difficult if you are constantly worrying about yourself. Whether it be your looks or personality, learn to live a life where you can be who you are.

Try to start maintaining good body posture as this would naturally give yourself vibes of dignity. Or, try thinking positive and come up with three good thoughts about yourself a day! After all, positivity is the first and most essential step to treating yourself with fairness.

'You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life' by Jen Sincero

By the end of this book, you will realize why you are how you are and how to love what you can't change. If your mental state is holding you back from achieving your goals you need to read this book. If you're open minded you will get a lot from this book.

'Girl, Stop Apologizing' by Rachel Hollis

This book is about making goals and achieving them and not making apologies for those goals.

"I don’t care what religion you were raised in. You weren’t taught guilt and shame by your creator. You were taught guilt and shame by people." - Rachel Hollis, Girl, Stop Apologizing

'[CB]The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck' by Mark Manson

The aim of this book is to help the reader to think better about their choices in life.

"Who you are is defined by what you’re willing to struggle."

'The Self-Love Experiment: Fifteen Principles for Becoming More Kind, Comionate, and Accepting of Yourself' by Shannon Kaiser

Too many people seem to believe that they are not allowed to put themselves first or go after their own dreams out of fear of being selfish or sacrificing others' needs. The Self-Love Experiment rectifies this problem and strongly spreads the message of self-respect.

'How to Love Yourself (and Sometimes Other People): Spiritual Advice for Modern Relationships' by Lodro Rinzler and Meggan Watterson

This book is about learning to love yourself no matter what, that you are worthy of love, both self-love and the love of others. You are worthy of respect. Of self respect.

"We don’t become worthy of love someday; we are worthy of love simply because we exist".
