ranking every taylor swift grammy’s look (including 2023’s) from meh to amazing: a thread

pls that this is just my opinion and you’re more than welcome to disagree 🫶🏼

also none of this is meant to be taken as criticizing taylor or me saying she shouldn’t have worn something or should’ve changed it, etc. all of these looks have their own appeal to them. that’s why i’m ranking them from ‘meh’ to amazing because i don’t think any of them deserve the title of ‘worst’. :relaxed:

and disclaimer: this ranking does start out looking like they’re in chronological order, but it mixes up about halfway through. so hang in there before you start thinking ‘uh this isn’t really a ranking’. taylor just gets better every year lol!

and with that, let’s get into the ranking:

10. 2008

i love her hair and her makeup and the color of the dress is beautiful. it’s just the style of the dress that gets me. the drop waist is a little awkward. and i get that it’s supposed to be like a corset, but i feel like it could’ve been done better. the corseted dress in the love story music video did it well.

and those little pieces on the skirt always throw me off when i look at them. it’s like i can’t tell what they’re supposed to look like, if anything. and that combined with the blue-ish parts at the bottom makes it look a little messy. like i can’t tell what’s going on at the bottom of the skirt.

from the waist up, this look is so pretty and suits taylor very well, but from the bottom, it just doesn’t compare to any of her other looks.

9. 2009

this is a cute look. who can hate a classic black dress? seems like something that was easy to walk in and very suitable for 19-year-old taylor at the time. very simple and sweet.

but that’s also the main detail that’s keeping it low on the list; it’s very simple. there’s kinda nothing to this look. cute, but nothing super unique about it. it doesn’t feel like an outfit to wear on the ‘biggest night in music’. i would’ve expect her to wear something like this to maybe the CMT’s or some other smaller award show. so it’s second-to-last because it doesn’t feel much like a grammy’s look.

8. 2010

i love what they were going for with this dress, i just don’t think they quite achieved it. i love the beautiful teal color and all the sparkles, but the shape - or rather lack of it - is where it falls short.

i get confused when i look at how this dress fits her. it doesn’t tuck in enough at the knees to make it clear that it’s a mermaid shape. it goes inward a little bit, but then awkwardly flares back out around the feet.

also, when i was looking for pictures of this outfit, some angles made it look like it doesn’t fit taylor very well. there’s no distinction between the bodice and the skirt, so it ends up looking like one solid piece of fabric that they cut a neck out of and put it on her. it’s the overall lack of shape that gets me on this one.

however, when she let her hair down later on, i think it made the look a little better because it draws the eye away from the body of the dress and more on the neckline, which is really pretty.

7. 2013

this one is so pretty! still a little on the simpler side for a grammy’s look, but i think the smaller details make up for it.

taylor always looks beautiful in white. i love the lined skirt with a slit. the silver straps compliment the color very well. and her hair is so cute with the little braid wrapping around! the only reason it’s not higher in the ranking is the almond-shaped pieces of fabric in the bodice. sometimes when i see this dress, that throws me off because it feels ever so slightly awkward in the shape. but even then, they don’t harm the overall look at all. it’s really pretty!

6. 2016

my opinion of this one is very similar to the previous one; i love it and there’s only one thing i would change/one thing that’s keeping it from being higher. for 2016, it’s the fact that it’s a little bottom-heavy.

i feel like every time i look at this grammy’s dress, it’s so hard to appreciate things like her necklace and hairstyle and the top. because my eyes want to go straight to the full, bright pink skirt.

don’t get me wrong though, besides that fact, i love this outfit. the colors are super unique. i never would’ve thought that bright orange and hot pink could go together in this way, but it does. i love that it’s almost like a sequel to the previous year’s dress with the over-skirt. her necklace is such an underrated detail too; i never see anyone mention it when talking about her 2016 grammy’s look.

overall, it’s gorgeous and unique and definitely memorable.

5. 2012

i find it nearly impossible not to stare at this dress every time it pops up on like my pinterest feed. it’s so beautiful and intricate. gold is always stunning on taylor and this time is no exception.

the little details are what solidifies its place in the upper half of the ranking. you can literally scan up and down this dress and you’ll almost constantly be finding new patterns. then there’s the slight sheerness in the skirt. i love the high neckline with the cutout in the middle. the cap sleeves make it feel youthful. there’s a line separating the bodice from the skirt, giving it some shape. it’s just a fantastic look for the grammy’s.

4. 2015

i would say this is another one of taylor’s most memorable looks. i seeing pictures of it shared everywhere when she attended the 2015 grammy’s.

the color is so beautiful and eye-catching and different from every other grammy’s dress she’s worn. it’s very classy, but also feels youthful with the mini skirt. and the purple heels (without any heels lol) make the whole look extra unique.

her hair and makeup are modest, but they go wonderfully with this dress. the whole vibe is fun, classy, and pretty. it was great choice for the 1989 era and it was a great choice for the grammy’s.

3. 2014

this look is so stunning. the chain metal overlay just makes it. from a distance, it can look as if the dress is covered in thousands of stones or sparkles. and up close, you see the fine metal. the dress is somehow simple and detailed at the same time. i love the cuffs on the short sleeves and the neckline. plus that belt-like thing that separates the bodice from the skirt and gives it some shape.

her hair is gorgeous with that voluminous ponytail. it’s different from the typical updo’s she dons at the grammy’s. it’s nice that she went light with the jewelry so the look doesn’t feel overwhelming. same with her makeup; it makes her eyes pop without overpowering her face.

2. 2023

this was so close to taking the top spot. the only thing holding it back is that she’s worn similar styles in the past. the crop top with high-waisted maxi skirt wasn’t uncommon for her during the 1989 era.

every single thing about this look is absolutely gorgeous. the deep blue color with scattered sparkles all over, giving the appearance of a night sky full of stars. it suited the midnights era perfectly. it’s elegant, eye-catching, perfect for the grammy’s.

while her hair is on the simpler side, what makes up for it is her makeup. the deep blue eyeliner she donned: perfection. it made the whole look cohesive. her earrings are slightly overpowering, but still beautiful. the purple in them compliments the blue really well.

this look will be ed as one of taylor’s best, i’m sure. it is simply stunning.

1. 2021

companies didn’t start making dupes of this dress immediately after she debuted it for nothing. taylor has never worn anything similar to this before or since. this look was a moment. it shined on the red carpet. it’s delicate and feminine and romantic and whimsical. it’s giving forest fairy vibes.

another reason this dress was wonderful was because it gave the folklore and evermore eras a chance to shine on a huge red carpet. the aesthetic is just immaculate. and let’s not forget the matching mask she brought with her! i mean, c’mon. this look has everything. it was also the first time she’d worn her curls to the grammy’s in a long time.
