30 hunger games writing prompts

hello!

two blogs in one day? crazy right! i’m trying to boost up my statistics to apply as curator, because my stats are completely miserable and i had no blogs on here. that’s besides the point. today i will be sharing 30 hunger games writing prompts, split into 3 sections based off of the 3 books. the hunger games, catching fire, and finally mockingjay. everything is based off the films as i haven’t read the books (yet), and so if you’re a writer i hope this inspires you! please credit if you use an idea though.

the hunger games prompts

1. what if gale was reaped?

it was never peeta destined to be with katniss inside of the arena, it was gale.

2. what if peeta didn’t love katniss?

you could take this prompt even further and make their relationship filled with hatred, or they could just be friends. your choice. (i want that haters to lovers fanfiction n o w).

3. what if prim and katniss swapped roles?

instead of prim’s name being reaped, it was katniss’. then instead of katniss volunteering, prim does so without thinking.

4. what if katniss’ father hadn’t died?

this leads the option to their family being less poor, therefore less names in the bowl during the reaping, and perhaps even more training for when/if katniss’ went into the games.

5. what if one of peeta’s brothers was in the game instead?

there are many possibilities with this au, including relationship dynamics as well as numerous options when it comes to the games.

6. peeta never loved katniss.

very similar to the one above, however this one rules out all possibilities of love. they do not care for each other, it doesn’t have to be hate however they are merely acquaintances and stay that way.

7. peeta/katniss died in the games.

you could even do both if you wished. you could focus on the emotional death, or you could focus on the aftermath and the health of the remaining character and/or their family.

8. prim loved to hunt, not katniss.

this au would mean that katniss is not good with a bow, or fighting/hunting in general. therefore would lead to more troubles inside the arena.

9. prim’s name was planted.

the capitol loves a sob story, so sometimes young children’s names are planted in the bowls with a slight symbol to indicate to select that one. this happened with prim’s name, and this follows the investigation as to the fairness of the reaping.

10. their mother was dead as well.

instead of just their father, the girls’ mother is dead as well. gale would care for prim whilst katniss is in the arena, but how well would that go and what would happen once the games were over?

catching fire prompts

1. what if mags never volunteered?

this would mean that poor annie would have had to participate in another round of the hunger games, who knows what would happen to her.

2. what if katniss died?

there were many opportunities for katniss to die, and thankfully people with their protecting her. yet what if their attempts at protection failed? would the revolution go on?

3. what if no one was aware of the plan?

if no one was aware of the plan, katniss and peeta might have had no allies at all. they could have been fighting all the other tributes alone.

4. what if peeta died?

katniss was very attached to peeta during the games, if he had died who knows what would’ve happened to katniss’ mental state or to the revolution.

5. what if all tributes were in on the plan?

a complete flip side to number 3, if everyone was aware of the plan no one would be attacking each other. this would make for a very boring game, so what would the game makers do?

6. instead of jabberjays, prim and annie were in the arena.

do you that scene where the jabberyjays mimic the screaming of loved ones? well this prompt poses the idea that those screams were not from birds.

7. the lies peeta told on tv weren’t lies.

this means two things, one more important than the other. number one, they got married (it’s up to you if they did make it private or not) then number two, katniss is pregnant.

8. katniss falls out of love with peeta.

it can be thought or that she never loved him at all, which means she would have no fight or ion for the revolution unless she had another reason.

9. haymitch went into the games instead of peeta.

i’m sure this would’ve been a great relief for katniss in the beginning, but how would she cope being so far away from the man she loved possibly without seeing him ever again?

10. katniss was in on the plan.

i’m honestly not too sure what this would change. her perspective on cinna dying, and all the others. maybe she’d feel extreme guilt during the time as she would know they died for the revolution, for her.

mockingjay prompts

1. what if peeta was never taken to the capitol?

this would mean that they didn’t have to have a huge search mission to get him back home, and would cut down pretty much the whole first film (from my memory).

2. what if katniss completely shutdown?

we all know how the girl suffered from horrific nightmares that would leave her in quite a state, but what if she was in this state forever and having a constant breakdown like how annie had been.

3. what if katniss refused to go on tv?

if the mockingjay herself refused to promote the revolution, who knows if they would’ve had such a big outcome.

4. what if katniss never killed coin?

her presidency i imagine to be very similar to president snow’s, except almost opposite. she’d endorse the poor, instead of the rich. she’d then kill the rich, instead of the poor.

5. what if finnick never died?

finnick’s death completely tore me apart, especially since him and annie had just gotten married and that she was expecting his child. that just makes his ing more heart-wrenching. someone write this fanfic now please! :joy:

6. prim never died.

very simple this one. it would mean no damage done to katniss’ relationship with gale, and that her sister would be there to her recovery from this whole ordeal.

7. their mother died.

you could add this onto prim’s death, or have this as a roles reversed au. this probably wouldn’t effect katniss so much, but it would definitely effect prim if she was alive.

8. katniss didn’t blame gale.

this would change the ending quite drastically as he would still be in her life, in fact it leaves the love triangle open for more mingling to be done.

9. katniss and peeta stayed in the capitol.

this would change how their children were raised, and possibly even how the new government was formed.

10. it had been peeta’s idea to do a double bombing.

instead of gale, peeta brought up the idea of having a double bombing. this could push katniss away from peeta towards gale, or maybe push her to just isolation.
