What THG Characters Names Mean (part 2)

So for this guys i will not be doing the main characters but rather the minor characters so as to not bombard yall with facts about Katniss’ name which I feel like we all know what that means now (it’s a plant). Then I am going to analyze why I think the name fits the character and go from there. This part is going to be female minor characters - none from the capitol.

Annie

Origin: Hebrew

Meaning: Prayer

Annie is a name that is a take on the more formal name “Anne” and it comes from a Hebrew origin and means “prayer”

Meaning to Character

This is going to be a little bit of a stretch honestly but stay with me here guys. Annie is a more quiet character from what we know about her and I am just going to go out on a very far outreach here and say that when Finnick met her, it is almost like his prayers if no longer being completely under the capitol’s thumb were answered

Madge

Origin: English

Meaning: elegant

Madge is a name of Middle English origins that has a meaning of “elegance” and is a nickname for others names like Madeline and Marjorie.

Meaning to Character

Madge is not a character we know a lot about besides that she was the one to give Katniss the district token in the first book and she is the mayor’s daughter. Maysilee Donner is also her aunt which comes into play kinda i guess. Madge is the daughter or the mayor which means she is one of the people in district twelve that is better off financially than the rest and likely lives in a more lavish house and has been raised in customs that are deemed elegant and fit for a woman of her standing

Maysilee

Origin: Luo (modern day Sudan origin)

Meaning: beautiful and majestic

Maysilee is a name of Luo origin which is a a tribe that is believed to be from modern-day Sudan and means beautiful and majestic

Meaning to Character

This took some digging but I did find that it is technically of Luo origin and not completely made up by Suzanne Collins. Maysilee is a beautiful girl as we know and she even saved Haymitch’s life which makes me think that her beauty is not only on the surface level but also under the surface which her selflessness.

Finch

Origin: West Germanic

Meaning: Songbird

Finch is a name that originally originates in west germanic cultures but also was seen in middle age sweden and middle age england and means songbird as there is a bird that is called a Finch

Meaning to Character

Finch is the opposite of a songbird in the books because she does not speak one word but I do believe the name fits her very aptly because she is extremely smart and more intuitive than a lot of the other tributes that she faced. I believe the name is perfect because she used her intellect rather than her beauty to get by and does not come off as fake.

Glimmer

Origin: Swedish & Danish

Meaning: shining, sparkling

Glimmer is a name of combined swedish and danish origin that means shining and sparkling

Meaning to Character

Glimmer’s name has to be the best fitting name of almost all of them because she is from district one and wears sparkly clothes and always wants to be the center of attention which one is when they are sparkling or shining. Glimmer also was likely chosen as her name because she was from District One and that is why she is the way that she is in the books

Wiress

Origin: Suzanne Collins

Meaning: female of wires

Wiress is a name created by author Suzanne Collins, but using grammar knowledge it can be inferred that the name means female of wires due to the two parts of the name: wire and ess.

Meaning to Character

This name to me is one that fits well because she comes from District three which is the district of technology and so the wire reference may be one to technology as she is like the female counterpart to beetee who won by electrocuting his competitors.

Cashmere

Origin: Kashmir Province in the Himalayas

Meaning: luxurious wool

Cashmere is a name that is known as a luxurious wool and originates in the Kashmir Province which is in the Himalayas

Meaning to Character

Cashmere is a luxurious wool and is very expensive and in the hunger games, Cashmere is a character from district one which is the district that produces luxury items, like the wool cashmere. I feel like the whole name is kind of an irony thing with her because her name is literally a luxurious wool that her district likely produces.

Mags

Origin: American

Meaning: a pearl

Mags is a name, similar to Madge, that is a shortened form of Marjorie and Margaret, and it comes from American origin with its meaning being “a pearl”

Meaning to Character

My sweet darling Mags. She is an older character as she did win a very very earlier hunger games and i feel like the meaning fits her because she is like a pearl. she is quiet and hidden away under the sea (district four) but she is beautiful when she steps in the light and is strong and powerful (volunteering in place of annie). i think her name is one of the ones that is more apt as well because pearls grow more beautiful with age, just like Mags/Lynn Cohen
