General Overview

✦ A cheerful but impulsive boy who cares greatly about his family, particularly Kairi, he is brought into the escape plan alongside Don and Gilda after the truth of the orphanage is revealed.

Katsumi is perceived by others to be a cheerful, energetic, happy, and social boy who is always friendly towards everyone. In contrast to Kairi, he is very careless, rowdy, less inclined and talkative. However, he also seems to be fairly intelligent, coming around 7th place in the everyday tests after Norman, Ray, Emma, Kairi, Gilda, and Don respectively (meaning in that order).

Similarly to Emma, Katsumi holds a great deal of love towards his siblings and is fiercely protective and cares deeply about them. He also wants to be seen as a person whom his siblings can rely on, so he is always determined to help out in some way.

Katsumi is noted to be impulsive and driven by his feelings, which Norman comments on at the beginning of the series. Some examples are getting himself in trouble by starting one-sided fights with Ray and beats himself up mentally if he thinks he should’ve done better in something, as shown when the three tell him the truth about Grace Farm. In reality, Katsumi was upset with himself for not realizing what was happening sooner. After being told the truth, Katsumi expresses his desire to become stronger so he can be there to help any way they need, which culminates in his decision to whole-heartedly help Gilda, Don, Emma, Norman, and Ray. However, he’s very kind and he cares more about Kairi’s feeling than anything else. He does his best to keep Kairi out of everything and makes sure she’s always away from them when they talk in case it might upset. Throughout his experiences, Katsumi gains more self-confidence and boosts his skills.

One night, two children were mysteriously shipped the Grace Farm field that Emma, Ray, and Norman were in. Kairi stutters when introducing herself and Katsumi laughs that she’s weird. At first, Ray and Norman were skeptical of the two while Emma greeted them warmly but they all eventually became friends. All five of them played together as little kids and were often seen with each other. They were the only four, besides Isabella, that Kairi was comfortable being around as a child. Katsumi was often see with Isabella as he was still warming us to the other kids. Once he warmed up to the other kids, he would be seen running through the house with Emma or having contests with Don.

After a couples of months living with them, Kairi was told by Isabella that she had a sickness. This “sickness” caused her to have shortness of breath and she wasn’t able to run a lot without getting tired. This caused Kairi to distance herself from the other kids for some time for fear of giving her “sickness” to other kids but after Isabella reassured her the sickness couldn’t be transferred to other people, Kairi was more calm around others. Though her “sickness” mostly kept her inside, it didn’t stop Katsumi from bringing his sister outside at least three times a week. In the early weeks of her sickness, he stayed by her side and wouldn’t leave until Isabella reassured him she would be alright and the sickness wasn’t severe.

One year, when the children were younger, Norman was sick and had to be quarantined in the orphanage’s sickbay. Emma, who cannot help to be isolated from her dear friend, sought to sneak into the medbay and accompany him, but failed in every try as she was caught by Isabella consistently, who forbade her to stay near Norman in fear of how his cold might spread to her. Katsumi thought this was funny and was shown hiding around the corner every time Emma attempted to get close to Norman but ended up being caught by Isabella. In the end, Emma thought of interacting with Norman via a tin can telephone. Norman chatted with her and the other orphans merrily through the night.

On his 7th birthday, Katsumi expressed an interest in music and Isabella gifted him with a guitar, which he often plays and uses to spend time with Kairi when he wants to hear her sing or just when he wants to be around her so it’s not awkward.

At a young age, Kairi, Katsumi, Emma, Norman and Ray snuck out to visit the gate that encircled the Grace Field House. Emma asked the four kids what they each want to do once they left the orphanage, merrily saying how she wants to ride a giraffe outside, though Ray was dismissive of her idea. Kairi said there wasn’t much she could do because the sickness Isabella told her about limited her a lot. Katsumi explained how he wanted to jump on rooftops and climb different trees. The five recalled how Isabella once warned them how they should never go to the gate or beyond the fence due to danger. The three went back the orphanage soon after.
