The Red Keep was quieter than Rhaenyra ed—haunted by ghosts, both real and imagined. The fire in the hearth flickered, casting long shadows across the stone walls and painting over memories she wished would fade. She stood by the window, her hand resting on the cold sill, staring into the darkness outside. She had stood at that very spot countless times as a girl, laughing with Alicent, whispering secrets, dreaming together of a world they could shape with their own hands. But now, the silence between them stretched further than the long years of war.

A soft knock at the door pulled her from her thoughts. She didn’t turn. “You may enter,” she said quietly.

The door creaked open, and she recognized the footsteps before seeing the face. Alicent. She looked older, wearier, but still held that quiet intensity Rhaenyra ed. Her auburn hair fell in waves down her back, a striking contrast to the pale green gown she wore—once a proud symbol of the Hightower name, now dulled by the weight of time and sorrow.

Neither spoke at first. Rhaenyra turned slowly, her expression unreadable, though her fingers curled tightly at her sides. “You shouldn’t have come,” she said. “I had to,” Alicent replied. She moved forward with deliberate steps, as though each one might crack the fragile space between them.

“I’ve thought of this moment every day since the war began. Since we chose our sides. Rhaenyra gave a soft scoff, the bitterness still raw in her voice. “You chose your side long before the war. You chose your father. The crown. Aegon.“

“And I lost you for it,” Alicent said, her voice laced with sorrow. The words hung heavily between them. From beneath her cloak, Alicent pulled out something small—a carved wooden dragon, worn and cracked with age. Rhaenyra gasped. She hadn’t seen it in years.

“You gave it to me the night before your wedding,” Alicent said. “Said it would protect me.”

“I was a fool,” Rhaenyra murmured. “No. You were in love. So was I.” Rhaenyra stilled, the words stopping her cold. She stepped forward, closing the space between them until only an arm’s length remained. “Why now?” she asked “Because I’ve lost everything else. My sons are strangers. My father’s legacy is ash. The only thing I still dream of… is you.” The silence that followed was thick with longing and memory. Alicent’s hand reached out to brush Rhaenyra’s cheek—tentative, reverent. Rhaenyra didn’t pull away. She searched Alicent’s eyes, and in that moment, time seemed to fold in on itself. They were young again. Whole.

Then, without plan or permission, Alicent kissed her. It was soft, hesitant—like a question neither had dared to ask aloud. Rhaenyra didn’t respond at first. But then her hand rose, her fingers threading through Alicent’s hair. And she kissed her back. It wasn’t a kiss of ion—it was grief. An apology. A thousand things they’d never said. They parted slowly, their foreheads resting together. “You broke my heart, Alicent,” Rhaenyra whispered.

“I know. And I will spend the rest of my life trying to mend what I shattered… if you let me.”Rhaenyra closed her eyes. For a long while, she said nothing. Then, barely audible, she whispered, “Then start with tonight. Stay.” And for the first time in years, the silence between them felt like peace.
