It was presumably just another day for both the God of Death and one that lived in limbo for ages past, they had been known as a couple for ages now, love enticing them both into each other's embrace. Death would have to go and visit his dearly beloved of course but it was no issue for him, as long as Geno did not leave the confines of the Menu that they had been encased in, things would be fine. But as of recently, work had been building up, causing the Reaper to even be split apart from their lover for a prolonged amount of time. He just prayed to the heavens above that Geno would forgive them for their long awaited arrival. He would owe them, possibly some gifts. With an exhale, the skeletons' cyan eye that focused on the yellow soul in his hand, another soul that stood for JUSTICE. Perhaps with there not being so many crossing this time. . .he could request for his brother to assist in guiding these lost and damned souls that stood in the between that determined life and death. That is of course if the souls were willing to listen to his brother and not rebel, otherwise he might be required to cull some.
Presumably as if Death had actually summoned his dear brother, Papyrus, they appeared next to him in a plume of smoke that twirled around the taller skeletons' figure, bearing a large scythe that glinted in what little light seeped through the sky. But as the skeleton appeared, they gave a glance to their smaller, yet older brother and offered a comforting smile - One that would assure another that everything was alright. But a small clearing of the older brother's throat caused a small tilt of the latter's head, questioning what it is that they could want.
"Hey, Papyrus, you and Undyne know I have done a lot so far in regards to taking care of the souls that wish to rebel, even after the death of Life, right? Would you mind if this one time I get a small break to myself? I just need a day after so much, and I would prefer not having the very personification of War hunt me down again."
The latter spoke, his voice deep and void of much emotion that anyone else might bear, only to flinch and tense as a skeletal hand came in to his shoulder, with his brothers thumb gently rubbing in a circular motion as if to serve as comfort - but their smile was enough to tell Death that it wasn't a bad kind of comfort as if it were meant to be out of pity, but rather of something else.
"Of course, Brother - I know after Miss Toriel's death that things have been hard for you, I'll be sure to let Miss Undyne know as soon as I finish up guiding the batch of souls I have here!"
This sentence was met with a relieved look from the Reaper, only nodding as they waved to their brother, commenting on how they would be back before they knew it, as they closed their eyes, darkness surrounding them and only having a new area slowly fabricate around him as his feet came in with the feeling of the blades of grass, opening his eyes to the oh so familiar golden glow of the Menu, bearing the words CONTINUE or RESET. It always made the latter tense up, it was a constant reminder to their poor lover that they were so close to their own world, but could never come into with it again. It was a new form of torment and torture that nobody deserved, not even Deaths worst enemy.
However it was not long until one thing came into realisation on the skeletons mind, looking around, the sight of his dearly beloved was nowhere to be found, they were not sitting in the middle of the Home Screen as they usually would be, which aroused some quick suspicion and worry, with his hands around his mouth, he called out for him.
. . . But Nobody Came.
Not even a call in return was given to him, as Reaper tensed up, his very soul racing inside of his chest, there was no way that his lover could have just left. . .not without the risk of them dying, considering how the Determination that resided inside of their soul was the one thing that kept them trapped inside of this accursed abyss. With a small shake of their head, the latter kept walking, leaving behind the Menu Screen in search of some sign that the latter was alright and just resting somewhere else - considering anyone would simply get sick and tired of staring at the same thing for so long.
"Geno?. . .Come on, I'm all one for jokes but this isn't funny anymore!"
He called out. only exhaling as he got no response, freezing in their tracks as one thing was revealed to them. . .barely there from it drying out but it was still present - it was blood. Crimson red and slowly forming a trail the more the skeleton followed where it was taking him. His mind came up with horrible what if scenarios but brushed it aside, Geno was strong, they knew better than anyone how to keep up a good fight against anyone. When the blood got more and more frequent however, was when his pace quickened, his walking shifting into that of running and then sprinting, freezing when he arrived and gasping for air, chest ri and down rapidly.
The sight before him was enough to even kill the God of Death himself, right in front of him, was the figure in a white sweater and a red scarf, clutching their chest tightly with wheezing breaths, a pitch black bone with occasional glitches had struck their ribcage, in their very soul. With the sight of their lover in a fatal state, they didn't notice the strings of blue that had been scattered about the void, littering the place in more colour than beforehand. Though now, Death was swift to run over and go on his knees, scooping up the hurting Geno in his arms, tears blurring his vision and running down his cheekbone.
With this movement, Geno slowly opened their eye sockets, coughing out blood, placing their hand on top of Reapers with a small sad smile, their eyes showing a glimpse of happiness, as the dying skeleton gripped their lovers hand tightly - as if their touch was the one thing keeping him alive and going, as if they needed more proof that they were actually present, and he was not simply just hallucinating this very moment since he was slowly coming to a means of an end.
"You. . .You're really here. . .I'm. . .so sorry"
Geno mumbled out, still gasping for air that never seemed to completely fill their lungs, the eye lights in their socket weakly glowing, and the glitching that used to hide the hole in their head was barely even present anymore, stating how bad of a state they were truly in. While the Reaper leaned his body forward, resting his forehead against their temple, their fingers intertwining with their lovers shakily. They didn't even care of the latter's blood that smeared across their pitch black robe, with even some specks of dust that rested on their body. But even with the God of Death cradling them, and trembling, Geno did nothing but smile, not without letting out an occasional hiss in pain of course.
"Your my Heaven o-on. . .Earth, you. . .know that. . .?"
Geno said, extending a bloodied hand onto their lover's cheek, sending a smile their way that was only met with a frown and warm tears falling onto their hand. The sorrow that surrounded the Reaper was not to be underestimated, to witness their lover slowly away in their arms. . .it broke him - especially when all that their dear lover did was smile and try to cheer him up in such a weak state. . .it was a near impossible task to smile, even if it was an attempt to reassure Geno that everything was okay. . .it wasn't. It felt as if his whole world was shattering and falling apart around him, his sanity slowly dripping away along with Geno.
"How the hell can you - you be happy -- now?. . ."
Reaper asked, his face filling with pain upon seeing Geno attempting to smile, it was shocking how they could be positive about their own death, though with the answer he was given. . .it almost made Reaper break down completely right there and then as Geno uttered their words in a whisper, as if speaking any louder would cause further pain and more of a struggle for gaining their breath.
"Because I get to die in Death's embrace. . .your embrace. . .I think that's the safest place that I can find myself. . .d-don't you think?"
Geno said, offering a calming smile to Reaper, despite it causing him to flinch and frown, for the first time of Geno being around the God of Death, this was the first time he felt genuine sadness from them. . .even if their close friend, Toriel had died, Reaper always seemed to cheer up around their presence. But now. . .his comfort proved futile, with a small hiss coming from him, the white and red dressed individual let out another hiss from the pain that came from each individual breath and subtle movement.
"It. . .It hurts. . ."
The dying skeleton mumbled out, as Reaper wiped away only the current tears that blurred his vision, only causing more to replace their current place, as Reaper gently shifted them comfortably and gently on his lap, Death knew well when one was dying. . .but this one was too much to accept or bear witnessing, though he would remain by their side as they ed, it was his job after all.
"Shh. . .it's - it's gonna be fine. . .please keep talking, we - we can get you to someone that can heal you and - and you'll be alright!"
Reaper said, sticking onto the belief that they could still be saved, only to flinch upon gaining another sentence from his lover, who seemed to be slowly coming to peace with their situation, their smile remaining as their thumb gently rubbed against the gods cheekbone, the last touch he'd feel. . .
"Reaper. . .I'm t-tired. . .I want to r-rest. . .can I request. . .one last thing from you?"
Geno mumbled, his white pin-pricks focusing on his lover, a small glimmer in their gaze as Reaper met their gaze, holding back a choked sob before he gave a small nod, trying not to take notice of their body taking more gasps for air as they spoke, and their voice become more shaky while attempting to remain conscious and from fading just yet.
“You've got to live your life, Reaper. . .y-you need to be h-happy. . .and. . .and move o-on, and - and be happy. The h-happiest. . .just like I am now. . ."
Geno mumbled, coughing out blood as their wheezing breath continued, they felt dizzy. . .and their eyelids felt so. . .so heavy. As if the darkness promised them a safe paradise beyond the embrace of life. But Reaper soon forced himself to speak, despite his battered and heavy breathing with each attempt he made to speak through his sobs.
"I - I'll do my best. . .for-for you Geno. . .I promise"
"Thank you. . .I love you. . .s-so much. . .my C-Crow. . ."
"I love you too. . ."
The God of Death continued to cradle them, humming a soft tune as if he was reassured that it would bring Geno their last few moments of life, but his eyes went pitch black, as he saw their smile remain and a tear fall down their face, the tight grip that used to be present slowly faltered and went limp in their lovers embrace, their upside down and single remaining soul piece slowly dissolve as it turned to dust. . .leaving dust to coat their pitch black cloak. Soon leaving the God of Death to nothing but sickening silence.

The crunching of snow soon interrupted the silence that was now in Reapertale, as bare footed feet pressed against the firm packed snow, leaving skeletal footprints behind them. The warm air that mingled with the cold and sharp breeze created almost a mist, flowing and dancing with one another before they formed into nothing, merging with the cool air, not even allowing the smallest bit of comfort in the cold and brutal day that came today. Though it was less than important of the cold that gnawed at their bones as the skeleton had himself be guided to a certain area. It was a hill that bore a Cherry Blossom Tree, only bare without its leaves due to the season. While a tombstone rested at the top, at the top had a piece of a soul engraved into it. The bottom bearing the text of the following.
'Gone yet not forgotten, although we are apart, your spirit lies within me, forever in my heart'
With a small exhale, the skeleton knelt down, the Chrysanthemum that were placed around the tombstone, soon had a contrasting red compliment it of Roses and Poppies, a small frown entering his face before the skeleton lowered his head, resting it gently on top of the tombstone, tears rushing down his face at the memory of the moment that they died. With a shaky exhale, Reaper closed his eyes, the bittersweet cold being the only reminder that this was their reality, that they were gone. The only thing that snapped him out of his trance was the gentle warm breeze that was present only momentarily, almost nudging against their cheek before it faded.
He would continue on, and he would do his best to live up to that long promise. If the God of Death was known for one thing, it was that he kept to his word, and never did break such vows. Especially to his loved one. . .but one thing was for sure, he would never be able to give his heart and love to another, for his affection remained completely in Geno. No matter what happened.
