On this day in history in 1944, the Philippines campaign began on the island of Leyte. Coming through on MacArthur’s promise, this was his return to battle within the pacific theatre or war. The campaign lasted until September 2nd, 1945 which ended the Imperial Japanese occupation and reestablished the commonwealth of the Philippines. Approximately 1,250,000 American troops were involved, 260,715 Philippine troops, and 208 Mexican troops.
