i promised her i wouldn’t leave.
but i did.
the snow was coming.
she said, “do you ever feel like everything’s slipping?”
i should’ve said something better.
but i just said, “yeah. but not this. not you.”
i lied.
eliah: “liar.”
i her eyes.
they weren’t angry, just empty.
like she already knew what i was about to do.
eliah: “swear it.”
“i swear,” i said.
but i didn’t.
that night, i left.
i thought she’d be fine.
i thought i could go.
but the guilt ate me up slowly, piece by piece.
i never called.
never came back.
days turned to weeks.
snow covered everything.
but i couldn’t forget her.
i went back, to the bench where we carved our names.
her scarf was still there.
i picked it up, but she never came.
i whispered, “i’m sorry, eliah.”
but the snow was too heavy.
her name was lost beneath the frost.
and so was she
