Dream Catchers-also “sacred hoops”-are used in a variety of ways, sometimes for simple decoration but also for their original purpose as talismans to protect the sleeping from bad dreams. It is highly likely you’ve seen them before-the sometimes spiraling spiderwebs of thread and droplets of the occasional bead swaying above a collection of feathers in an array of colours- they’re popular to many with a vague range of fascinated children to greying wisemen and women.
The Dreamcatchers page of “The Witches Sage” informs us of the specifics of what each part of them can mean:
“The shape of the dreamcatcher is a circle because it represents the circle of life and how forces like the sun and moon travel each day and night across the sky. The dreamcatcher web catches the bad dreams during the night and dispose of them when the day comes. As for the good dreams, the feathers act as a fluffy, pillow-like ladder that allows them to gently descend upon the sleeping person undisturbed. There is some contention when it comes to the meaning of the beads that often decorate the dreamcatcher. According to some American Indians, the beads symbolize the spider—the web weaver itself. Others believe the beads symbolize the good dreams that could not through the web, immortalized in the form of sacred charms.”

The origins of the Dreamcatcher can be traced back to native american legends such as the Legend of the Dreamcatcher, in which a vision of “the great trickster and teacher of wisdom” Iktomi appeared before an old Lakota spiritual leader in the form of a spider speaking in sacred tongues. Iktomi wove the first dreamcatcher and explained to the elder about the circle of life and influences of good and bad through the lives of the people. He explained how the Web of the talismen could catch good ideas, and the bad ones will go through the hole, or the bad ideas are caught in the web to be removed and the good ideas are allowed free reign. Some also believe that the bad are caught in the web while the good flow down to the feathers before going to the person.
Another story of lore for the Dreamcatcher is that of the Objibwe, about Asibikaashi, who was the one to bring the sun to the sky every morning, where it could spread the sun’s energy to all her people. The legend is simpler, telling that as the tribe grew and stretched its domain, she enlisted tribal sisters, mothers, and grandmothers to “weave magical hoops that caught and held onto the energy of dreams” to aid in her eternal endeavor.
