Kaori Miyazono hand drawing and mini tutorial :D ( Art Club Application)

Hellooo everyone x3!! I´m back with another drawing :D! Thanks to all the people that voted in the last poll i made, and the winner was Kaori !

I'm sorry for the ones that didn't vote for Kaori :(.. but don't worry, I'll be doing more drawings of the other characters ;). So, for this mini-tutorial, and why do I call it mini? Not because its going to be a short blog, because it isn't short so get ready x)!.. I call it mini because i consider that u will see like "big jumps" between one step and the other one x), but i can't make all the steps with photos because it would be kind of confuse, so, i hope that maybe in another tutorial, i´ll try to make a time-lapse video, i don't have a good quality camera though :/, but we'll see...

Now, before starting with the tutorial, just a few words about why did i chose this image of kaori and a little bit about my drawing style for the Art club application :3.. I chose this image of Kaori because it was pretty rich in details, colors ( i draw in black and white but i liked the colors x3), and seeing Kaori Crying, but at the same time with a smile on her face, reminded me how she would have felt in the last days of life she had and that she spent with kousei and at the hospital, happy that finally she was able to meet his true love and spend such good time with him, but at the same time, knowing that she could leave this world at any moment, really touched me :(

What about my drawing style and my drawings in general?

I guess the way i draw its like a mixture of all the things I've seen related of how to draw different shapes, objects, etc. About how to shade properly, i more consider it like a fusion between how to draw realistic stuff and how to draw manga - cartooned stuff. In my drawings i try to make it look like the original image i pick, that's why i try to give soft shades so it can give that realistic touch, even if i don't get that effect x) .

Do i love to draw?

Yes i really like to draw :3.. i´ve been drawing since i was a kid, the only bad thing about it, is that it consumes a lot of time, at least for me :/.. And with college, my job, it is hard to keep a constant rhythm of drawings, but if i dedicate little amounts of time, each day, to make a drawing, i can still keep up making them in a few days :).

Ok, with that said, let´s start with the drawing :D:

The Materials i used for this drawing were:

* A white sheet of bond paper

* HB and 6B Pencils

* Black ink pen

* A cotton Swab ( Yeah it sounds weird but i´I'll explain later)

* Eraser and sharpener

I divide my drawings in 2 main steps : Sketch and (Shading & Details), i mix the last 2, because i give details while i´m in the shading process x)

The Sketch

1 - First of all, for make it easier , i take the original image , and with any editing program, change the colors of it to Black and White so i can have a better look of the shades i´m going to make. This is how the original image looked after the change of color.

2 - What i did was make an almost invisible division at the center of the sheet of paper to make that my reference , then i started drawing the face of Kaori, i always start with the face, so for this, i try to have my image of reference at the same scale that i will do my drawing so i can take little measures of the facial features and use those measures in my drawing, i usually make them using my pencil as a ruler, so i make little lines to delimitate the size of each part of the face. All of this its done with a little bit of pressure in the pencil HB, because its just the sketch, so if we make any mistake we can erase it easily.

3 - Then i started to draw the outlines of the hair around Kaori's face, because it was the hair that gave shape to her face. Also i draw the upper hair and left it like if she had short hair, but i did this just as a reference of how it was the shape of her head and how should i do the rest of the hair.

4- I draw the general shape of the eyes, the upper eyelashes but without color, and the outlines of the iris. Because of the size of the drawing, all these steps were made holding the pencil like we usually hold it to write, but as i said, without putting too much pressure on it.

5- I made some changes in the shape of the face because i got some mistakes on it x), after that, I moved to the rest of the hair, in this case i stopped holding my pencil the way i write, and i started to hold it from the middle , and moving it with my index and middle finger. If u feel more comfortable by holding it a different way, its perfect :)! Also i drew the neck and a little bit of the uniform, i also added some little shades at the neck but that was optional x).

6- From the previous step forward, i started drawing the rest of the drawing excluding the background,, due that every object has its own way to be drawn, u ,ust find the best way to draw every different object in the drawings u'll made in the future; if u have troubles with curves i recommend u to make the trace of the curve by drawing little lines one after another one instead of trying to make the curve with one trace only, it will look a little bit irregular, but due that its made by not putting too much pressure, its not to visible, so u can make another trace over it, and now that u have the previous traces as reference, its easier to make the curve with one trace and it will look better.

With the sketch done , its time to add the details , the shades and in this case, the background!

Shades , Details & Background

From this step forward, we start to put more pressure to the pencil, but if we press too much and if we make mistakes, it can be harder to erase all the graphite from the drawing, so , i recommend u to create "layers", start with some "light shades", and apply them to all the drawing, so if u make some mistakes, it wont be so hard to erase it. when u finished shading the whole drawing, start again, making them darker and darker. Now that u have the first layer and everything its ok, u know where u can give the darkest shades, so maybe you'll need up to 1 or 2 more layers, but always be careful, never do the darkest shades first! go gradually. In this section, the pencil 6B will be put to use x).

1- I started giving the details to Kaori's eyes, sorry if i couldn't take pictures of every step while drawing the eye, but i forgot to do it, sorry!! first i drew the pupil; in the original drawing there is a light reflection dot on the upper-right corner of the pupil, so i didn't colored that part, then i made the respective shades, but starting with a soft tone, as the layers as explained previously, u then u start making them darker and darker, but i don't recommend u to make them the darkest possible, because we are still in the first layer, just give them a general shading, and you can come back later for the next layer.

2- Then i started shading the hair, the cotton swab we mention at the materials' list. Well, now it will come in handy, but how? We need some graphite dust, we can make it by taking our pencil tip, and with a sharpener, start to thin only the graphite tip, then the dust that we'll have, we put it in a piece of paper, and then roll one of the sides of the cotton swap on the graphite, and will become like a paintbrush x), we paint in the piece of paper to eliminate the excess of graphite, and then we can start to use it in our drawing, because of the cotton, it will give us a pretty soft shade, we put more or less graphite on it to change the tone of the shade, we can also use our finger to do that, like the finger painting we did when we were little kids x3.. I like to my finger all over the sketch to give it a general colour, and the places that are at light, leave them as they are. I took the graphite from my 6B pencil, but u can take it from any pencil, but its easier with pencil with a soft tip.

3 - I kept shading the hair and i added a general colour to the background around kaori's head to see how the hair would look with the background and see which sections to leave at dark, and which ones leave at light.

4 - I moved to the rest of the drawing, using the techniques i mentioned before to do so, be patient, shade properly and calmed x), control the pressure we put in our pencil, the amount of graphite we'll use. etc

5- In this step, i moved to the second layer of shades, here basically, i started to use the 6B pencil for the darkest shades, like the details in the violin, the neck of it, and the chin rest. also the stripes that u can see on her skirt. the folds in her uniform, etc.

6 - After the second layer, i moved to the background, here, i used many graphite dust, carefully i spread it around the drawing, give a light touch to it, so it will stick in my finger, and slowly ing it by to give a general color to all the background. Then with the eraser, i started to give shape to the clouds, and with the pencil give the darker shades, i repeated it for all the clouds and details.

7 - For this last step, it was the 3rd layer of shades, again, i forgot to take pictures of this i'm so sorry :(! Basically, i took my black ink pen to give the last details. Due that is ink and we can't erase it, i still use it with a little bit of fear x), so i just use it in outlines and pretty dark shades, but that are small, like the folds of the uniform, and outlining in general.

And those were all the steps and here it is the final result!
