Introduction:

As the night settles in the city, the first shot can be heard echoing throughout the streets, followed by a second, a third, a whole burst of them.

The silhouette is standing in a corner, infected around him, slowly crawling closer. In the darkness, the weak glow coming from the tip of the cigar in the figure's mouth and the muzzle flash from his rifle is all that lights him up, as he calmly and precisely aims his rifle at the head of each infected. Shots are fired, and the bodies drop. Slowly, the horde of zombies is decreasing.

Finally, each one of the monsters are down, laying in a half circle around the man. He grunts softly, reloading his empty rifle, before taking a puff on his cigar.

[Backstory]

Childhood

Born in New York, 1970, Andrew Johnson was the the child to a family with a long history of fighting in wars, dating all the way back to the American Revolution. His father was no exception to this 'family tradition', being a soldier in the Vietnam War during the birth of Andrew. He would not be present during his first and only son's birth, and the two met only once, before the father's death later the same year.

He was raised by his mother, and later also step dad, though always feeling as if he did not fit in properly in the family. As his mother and step dad eventually broke up around 1977, Andrew somehow fell in between, eventually being taken care of by his aunt in Chicago instead.

Andrew Johnson's tough childhood would not stop there, as the aunt was rather poor and very religious, and Johnson's childhood reflected that. However, Johnson really liked this time in his life, as even though he was not able to own all the things that his friends did, the not always easy life made him appreciate what is truly important in life. Though it is not sure if he himself truly believed in God, his aunt's religious beliefs resonated deeply within Johnson and often made him question his own decision to kill other human beings, even long after her death.

Early military career

Nevertheless, Johnson would enlist in the US army at the age of eighteen, after that his aunt had died in cancer one year earlier, a hard loss for Johnson. He was present in the US invasion of Panama as a Corporal. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant and awarded a silver star for his actions in the Gulf War, and also serviced in the Bosnian War, though there is little information of his actions during any of the three conflicts.

World Outbreak, 1997

At the time of the outbreak of H741Z in the Europe and Asia, Johnson was stationed in America. Though shocking him at first, this did not surprise Johnson that much, as he had for a long time had a feeling that "The world was 'bout to go to hell sooner or later.".

In 1998, he would be one of the first American soldiers to be sent into Europe to counter the growing infestation. During his time in the Netherlands, he would first encounter the infected. Unlike many of those who served under him, Johnson would remain collected, even during the most intense situations. He would see many his men and civilians perish in the chaos that the infection caused, and learned to respect this new, undead foe, but also how to deal with them.

China

Johnson would be present during the fall of China in december of 1998, as he was trying to help evacuating citizens from Peking. It was while searching through a Chinese military facility that Johnson came across a QBB-95 rifle by the body of an Chinese soldier. The Sergeant decided to take the weapon with him, partially as a memory, partially for practicality. He would later carve the phrase '踢屁股' into the rifle, which in direct translation meant 'Kick ass'.

Early engagements

Johnson, now Sergeant Major and awarded the Navy Cross, would continue to see action across the world, including Korea, Kenya, . He was also present during the fall of England. These events would shape him and his view on life.

On multiple occasions, Johnson was offered to the Navy SEAL, to which he declined, saying that "Who else will keep my boys in check?", referring to the soldiers serving under him.

Ukraine

In 2007, Johnson would be stationed in Ukraine, assisting the evacuation of a large group of survivors. He had been handpicked to assist in the dangerous mission due to his experience with dealing with infected. It would be during this evacuation that Johnson and the others came to hear about mysterious 'monster zombies' in an apartment complex in the center of the city that was being evacuated. Johnson and Navy SEAL soldiers were sent to investigate, as it was deemed important by the United States that this supposed new type of infected would be documented.

Upon entering the building, the group was met with a terrible stench, and Johnson adviced them to put on their gas masks, as he deemed the air possibly dangerous to inhale. The group continued further into the building, quickly realizing that the floors and walls and ceilings were covered in what could only be described as rottening flesh. Suddenly, the group was engaged by hostile creatures that Johnson had never witnessed before. The group opened fire on the infected creature, but were quickly overwhelmed. The majority of the group was killed during the first minutes of combat, and through sheer willpower and luck Johnson managed, together with a heavily traumatized Corpsman fight his way out of the Hive. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions.

Later engagements

Johnson would continue to serve the US Marine Corps after the Ukraine Encounter of 2007. He would see action in different parts of the world. He was highly respected and rather well known for his past and his unique personality, and many wondered why he was not promoted to a commissioned officer.

US Outbreak, 2011

In 2011 he was, like most US military personnel, a part of OPERATION LIFELINE. He was an escort onboard a ship meant for evacuation of survivors of the infected world. He was on multiple evacuation missions between February and early June. A few weeks before his next departure towards Norway, the outbreak would begin in America.

Johnson was sent to fight back the infected, but as the days went by, they continued to be pushed back, until around two weeks later the word came that the government had fallen; they had lost, lost everything. As the military was disbanded, Johnson stayed with a group which was still true to the cause: protecting innocent lives. He stayed with the ragtag group for an unknown amount of time, before he found himself alone after an unexpected zombie horde had shattered the group.

Other backstory related information

Johnson is known to have been in a few relationships, the latest being during the time of the American outbreak. However, he is currently not in a relationship. Presumably, the woman who was in a relationship with him was lost during the apocalypse.

Early in his military career, Johnson grew very fond of cigars, going so far to illegally getting cuban cigars delivered to him, even when on duty and even in combat.

Andrew Johnson's behavior is rather eccentric, and he often delivered outlandish speeches to boost the morale of those serving under him. However, when it came down to it, he was a no-nonsense NCO, who, although caring deeply for his troops, pushed them hard during training.

Though he can at times be humorous and joking, even at rather tough times, he is always serious and 'straight-to-the-point' when the situation needs him to be. This is usually when lives are at risk or a similar danger is at hand.

Johnson has a low tolerance for rude people, especially those who mistreat or hurt others, as he stands for protecting all innocents.

Though it is not sure if he himself ia that religious, his aunt's Christian beliefs resonated deeply within Johnson and often made him question his own decision to kill other human beings, even long after her death. However, he has never had any issue with killing infected, probably because he knows that even though they once have been human beings, letting them live will only lead to more death and despair.

Johnson is very fond of cigars, and tend to smoke them in many different situations, when thinking, when stressed and even in combat.

Johnson is known to have returning nightmares, often of his encounters with the infected and the deaths that he has witnessed. An especially returning nightmare is that of the Whisper of Pain. This hints at him possibly having Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Still, he keeps on fighting, ignoring his pains.
