In which, The Avengers decide to go ghost hunting, and plans go wrong.
Warning: I have mentioned death as a part of the backstory of the haunted mansion.
It was just another normal day at the Stark Tower.
Steve was taking a nap, Tony was tinkering in his lab, Natasha was gathering Intel, and Clint, was, well, stuck in a conundrum, thinking whether to eat 2 day old pizza or not. Bruce saw Clints look of concentration, and was mildly surprised, "That goes into the bin, just like Tony's unholy coffee.", Bruce said as he rubbed his temples. Clint nodded, in agreement and ate the pizza anyways. Bruce rolled eyes, and muttered, "Hawk guy-".
Bucky and Sam, walked into the building, while arguing. It's their routine, to bring up anything and debate on it. The avengers were tired of it, but they occasionally enjoyed this bickering and jumping into their discussion. Bucky sat down to get a bowl of cereal, and Sam said, "Bucky look, a picture of a ghost.", with a dramatic expression and proceeded to show him an image of a person standing in a white sheet. Bucky rolled his eyes and said, "Good to know that you've finally changed your mind, and started believing". Sam made a sour face and sat on the table.
Tony ran out of coffee and finally made an appearance into the kitchen and then asked Bruce, "What are our lovely friends debating about today?", with a sickly sweet voice. Bruce shrugged and said, "Just the usual, whether ghosts exist or not". And Tony said, "Dummies. Ghosts don't exist.", and Bruce silently said, "What if they do.", and Tony almost choked on his coffee.
Tony held back a laugh and said, "You don't actually-. Do you believe in Yeti too?", and Bruce said with great caution, "Tony, there's plenty of things which science cannot give concrete answers to, as of now. If aliens are real then why not-".
Clint chimed in with a, 'Hell yeah, man. Ghosts exist.", and Tony looked up in hopes that a higher power might just end his misery by granting him selective hearing for a few hours. Well ge didn't actually wish for that. But Tony likes to dramatic at times. What started off as normal disagreements escalated to a debate, and was now verging on a catastrophe. The last straw was when Natasha threw a handful of wheat flour at Clint who was mimicking her. And Steve finally put his foot down.
"There's no point in arguing, cause we're never going to find a conclusive answer.", and Tony said, "What if we, found a temporary answer then.", and Steve was confused to say the least. Tony continued by saying, "Let's go to the most haunted place on Earth, and if we find any evidence, well then there's your answer. But, that won't happen, cause ghosts don't exist.", and in a small voice Bucky said, "Damn it, I wanted to watch The Ghostbusters today.", and Sam blinked for a while, and wondered what sins he had committed, that he had to sit through this all. Sam was dramatic.
"I'll get the Jet, ready", Natasha said, as she left. And Clint decided to go full Ghostbusters, and packed 3 cameras and a voice recorder. Sam packed a megaphone, and sarcastically replied to Bucky's question, "Oh yeah, ghosts would have a bit of troubling listening to us, wouldn't they. Cause you know, they are in the afterlife-", and Bucky said, "I wish Thor was here to shut you up". Sam gulped at the thought of arguing with Thor, after the bee incident. It was an level 7 disaster.
"Aight, here we go again.", Steve sighed, as he decided to go empty handed to this 'ghost hunting'. Steve wasn't a believer, per se, but he did believe that many phenomena couldn't be explained by science. But Bucky and Clint were true believers, they'd even practiced their, 'hah! told you so'. All Natasha said was, "I don't believe in ghosts. But if you keep on going, I'll show you that theres something much more terrifying than ghosts." They decided that it was wise not to get on her nerves.
"We're here.", Tony said, as everyone read the board, 'Borne Mansion", well everyone except Bucky, who was too busy iring the Quinjet. Fond memories of Stark expo and the old days, played before his eyes, and a gentle pat from Steve pulled him out of his dazy state. Things weren't the same anymore, but it was still Bucky and Steve. Two idiots, who had each other, even when they had nothing else.
A shiver ran down Bruce's spine as he stood in front of the gates. Fear. Pulsing Heart. Sweaty palms. Bruce knew that this was a bad idea, but he knew deep down within, that he'd be alright. The avengers were his family, afterall. Even if the avengers had different opinions, they were still one, in the end. Bruce knew that this trip would be a tough one, but with his family by his side, he was invincible.
Clint thought out loud, "Where's Thor?.", and Natasha replied that Thor had to leave for Asgard, because there was were issues to be addressed.
Clint shrugged and open the gates of the mansion. "Hey Ghouls, the boys are here.", Bucky whispered to himself, and Clint, Bruce looked at him with a faint smile, because they were happy that Bucky ed that reference. Steve and Tony walked in front, because everyone was either too scared or too unbothered.
Steve asked Tony, "Why is this place considered to be the most-", and was interrupted by a scream let out by Bucky. A painting had fallen on Bucky, and Sam said to himself, "That is one ugly painting". And it was. It looked like a self aggrandizing portrait of a monarch. Tony finally answered Steve's question, "The Monarch waged a war and when he knew he was going to be defeated, he decided to flee. But the enemies found out that he was hiding over here, and torched the place.", in a slow and grim voice.
The air just got ten times thicker, and Bruce started to have trouble in breathing. They continued to search, as Bucky suggested, "Maybe we should all split up to cover more perimeter in less time.", and Sam exclaimed, "I knew Bucky had a secret agenda, and now he's planning to-", and Tony said, "That's a dumb idea, but I'll take it, cause all you're gonna find is dust and maybe a few rats. I want to get outta here, as soon as possible". And then they formed 2 teams, Steve, Natasha and Clint, the other one had Tony, Bruce, Bucky, and Sam.
Steve ascended up the staircase as the stairs creaked. Unbothered Steve, decided to lead everyone into a room which had quite literally, "stay. out." written in bold on the door. Natasha walked into the room, and said, "What?.", as Clint pointed to the rocking chair, which had a doll on it. Natasha rolled her eyes and said, "Ever heard of wind, Clint?.", and Steve laughed. "This room's clear", Steve said, as they all walked out from it. But after a few seconds they heard a knock. And again. And again. The sound of silence rang through their ears and Clint felt his heart rate increase. At this point, Steve had started to believe that this place was indeed haunted. Natasha ran to the room, and tried to open the door. But it was locked. Natasha was confused, because she knew that she didnt lock it. All this mystery was getting to her and she forcefully opened the door.
The room was still the same, but Steve died a bit inside when he said, "Where'd that doll go?". And the 3 ran out of the room. Clint was too scared to do the, "I told you so" dance. Yes, "dance".
Meanwhile, everything was coming up daisies in Camp Tony. Bruce had told 3 knock knock jokes, trying to lighten the mood, and Sam decided that he would start believing in ghosts, just to stop these jokes. Bucky was still a bit shook up, from the entire ordeal. "There it is", Tony said, and everyone's looked at a once royal, room. "Here, the Monarch fell.", and everyone felt fear swarm them. Bruce looked around and almost screamed, when he heard a pair of feet approaching this room. He silenced Tony, and made sure that everyone was in fact hearing footsteps and that he wasn't going crazy.
Sound of heavy footsteps approached them, and Sam started to feel dizzy. Tony clutched his flashlight, awaited the visitor. And all of a sudden the footsteps stopped. Sam ran to door and saw that no one was there. He could've only missed the visitor by a few seconds. "Alright that's it.", Bruce grabbed everyone and decided that it was time to leave. They met Camp Steve, near the fountain, where everyone talked about their experiences.
Tony flashed a guilty smile, when he said, "Thor is a prankster, isn't he.", and Bruce punched his shoulder lightly. "You could've at least told me, we're Science Bros!!". And Tony laughed. Thor walked out from the mansion and said, "Stark is a mischievous one.", and Steve mimicked that sentence.
As everyone sat aboard the Quinjet and exchanged laughs, Clint said, "This was nice and stuff, but the doll prank was going overboard-", and Steve and Natasha nodded in agreement. That's when Thor said, "What doll prank?". Natasha's face grew serious as she said, "The disappearing doll one, Thor", and a look of shock painted Thor's face as he said, "I have not, done anything of that sort, all I did was write on the door, "come in if you dare", and walk up to the room.", and Steve said with frustration, "Thor, stop kidding. Prank is done. You wrote, "keep. out." on the door, and you made the knock-", and Bucky interjected, "It could'nt have been Thor cause he was pranking us at that time!".
Everyone looked at Tony for a possible explanation, and he shrugged as he said, "I have no role in this". Everyone decided to let this go, as a part of the prank. But while everyone was going back to their rooms, Tony told Thor, "Wow, that must've been a great one, Thor. Didn't know you had it in you.", and Thor solemnly said, "Tony, I had no role in that, and you have my word for it". Tony's heart sank and as he woke everyone up. A sinister laugh echoed in the Borne Mansion. The avengers had left, but the inhabitants, await for their next guests. The fire didn't the Monarch, it set him free.
Meanwhile, a certain Peter Parker, gets a text from his friend, Ned, saying that they should go and see a haunted mansion, while on school trip. And Peter hesitates for a while, but agrees. Ned googles, "Borne Mansion", and whispered to himself, "Ghosts aren't real", and hopes to visit this place with his friends.
Ghosts aren't real.
Or are they?.
