I feel as if a lot of the here would be interested in a future job with animals or are maybe already working with animals. I’ve put together a list of jobs for those that have a main interest in dogs (like myself).

I will also be including some downsides to the job and the average salary.

☆Dog behaviourist☆

A dog behaviourist recommends and gives behaviour modification, desensitization, training, and other methods to help solve dog behaviour problems. Some downsides to this job are that not all owners will listen to your advice and stick to your plans and there’s a risk of injury when dealing with aggressive and nervous dogs.

The average salary for a newly starting dog behaviourist is £15,000 a year ($19,241).

☆Kennel assistant☆

A kennel assistant or someone that works in a doggy day care supervises dogs and cares for and cleans up after dogs that are ​boarding for days to weeks. Dog kennels and day care centres are usually two separate things but can sometimes be the same business. Some downsides to this job are dog bites are likely to occur if not careful, it involves a lot of cleaning and it doesn’t usually pay well for the amount of work and hours you do.

Another career option that relates to this is running your own boarding kennels or day care facility. This will be expensive if you don’t have your own land to have it on.

The average salary for a newly starting kennel assistant is £16,550 a year ($21,229).

☆Dog breeder☆

Dog breeding is not all about producing some pure bred puppies and then just selling them for some money. Dog breeding usually just starts off as a hobby and not much money is made at first since it’s all about producing healthy and happy dogs and dogs that meet the breed standard if they’re for show.

Dog breeding must be done responsibility and can only turn into a career over time and it can’t be guaranteed that will happen. This is just a case where a serious hobby might turn into something more. Some downsides to being a dog breeder is that a profit isn’t always made since it’s not all about money and it can be emotional if you get attached to the puppies or one doesn’t make it.

☆Dog groomer☆

Dog groomers style dogs for conformation, photographs and just for everyday life. To become a groomer you will have to attend a dog grooming course to learn all of the different techniques and styles. Some downsides to being a dog groomer are that some dogs might have parasites and that some dogs will be aggressive due to the new people, sounds and handling.

The average salary for a newly starting dog groomer is £17,695 a year ($22,697).

☆Dog sitter and walker☆

Many people make a living out of this while others do it as a side job for some extra income. Dog sitters go to homes to care for dogs while their owners are out of town. This includes feeding, walking, medicating, playing, and cleaning up after dogs.

Some downsides to this job are not all dogs will be easy to walk and you need to have a very flexible schedule.

The average salary for a newly starting dog walker and sitter is £23,652 a year ($30,339).

☆Dog show handler☆

Handlers are paid by owners to handle their dogs at shows and the goal is to earn champion titles. A handler must have a strong understanding of breed standards, lots of experience working in dog shows and a willingness to travel frequently. Some downsides to this job are that it can take years of dedication to do well and that it takes up a lot of your time.

The average salary for a newly starting dog show handler is £22,300 a year ($28,800).

☆Dog trainer☆

Working as a dog trainer requires an understanding of the canine mind, the ability to educate and a lot of patience. Dog trainers teach commands from basic to advanced and help dog owners teach these commands to their own dogs. Some dog trainers will also work with future service and working dogs, and teach some dog "actors" to perform for television and film. Some downsides to this job are that there’s a risk of bites and bad scratches and some owners will not listen to your advice which is frustrating.

The average salary for a newly starting dog trainer is £23,742 a year ($30,660).

☆Pet shop☆

It’s easy to work in a pet shop with little or no experience. This sort of job involves stacking shelves, serving customers at the till, cleaning, greeting/helping customers and caring for any live animals sold within the shop. Some downsides of this career are that retail salaries aren’t often the best and focusing on the business side means less time working with dogs.

The average salary for a newly starting pet shop worker is £11,000 a year ($14,126).

☆Public services☆

Working with dogs in public services can be very rewarding. There are many different types of dogs you can work with. Police or military working dogs are teamed up with a human partner (a qualified officer) and often live with them. Search and rescue dogs are specially trained to find lost people and often live with their owners/handlers and are called out for a search when needed. Some downsides to this job are that it’s a long term commitment, often emotionally difficult and it’s sometimes volunteer work which means you won’t earn any money.

☆Veterinary medicine☆

Working in veterinary medicine could mean being a vet, veterinary nurse or a veterinary assistant. If your going for something such as a veterinarian it’ll involve four years of college followed by four years of vet school. Some downsides to this job are you will be dealing with sick pets and very emotional owners and many animals will bite.

☆Dog photographer☆

Being a dog photographer can involve working within your own studio, going to pet owners home or going out on walks with dogs and their owners to capture some action shots. To become a professional photographer you will need a very good camera and preferably to have studied photography. Some downsides to this career are that some dogs might be very hard to photograph and some people do it as a hobby rather than a profession.

The average salary for a newly starting dog photographer is £20,000 a year ($25,683).

☆Canine hydrotherapist☆

Hydrotherapy is a treatment that involves low-impact physiotherapy which uses water to help exercise muscles and ts. You might be helping dogs that are recovering from surgery, injury, illness or just needing to keep fit or lose weight. A downside to this job is that it’s very time consuming and you won’t get a lot of time off and will be working weekends.

The average salary for a newly starting canine hydrotherapist is £29,750 a year ($38,204).
