The Basset Hound originated in (Belgium too I believe). One of their ancestors is the Bloodhound (aka St. Hubert Hound). These dogs were crossed with older French breeds. This resulted in a low-build of dog that had an amazing sense of smell. The Basset Hound. These dogs were used to hunt small animals like rabbit.

Basset Hounds are an AMAZING dog to have in a family. They absolutely love kids and can get along with other dogs. If you are looking for an attack dog to attack intruders, this isn’t the right dog. They are very affectionate, even towards strangers which is why they wouldn’t be good guard dogs.

This breed can shed, so I would brush them every other day. They are really lazy and can be easygoing dogs. These puppers don’t really need a lot of exercise, but can if necessary. They are usually healthy, but because of their floppy ears, you should check them frequently for any infections they might have.

Basset Hounds are smart and quite clever but it’s not a piece of cake to train them. They also tend to be quite loud and like to wander a lot. They were bred to hunt after all.

A little fun fact is that their floppy ears actually help bring scents into their face, making it easier to smell prey or food. If you ever heard of Droopy (a cartoon character) he is actually a Basset Hound. You can watch many short clips of him in YouTube. I’ll also have my favorite clip at the end of this post.

Well guys, thanks for stopping by. Basset Hounds are incredibly adorable and cute in my opinion. If you want to learn more, go ahead and look it up on the web. These couch potatoes are extremely friendly and love to bark and howl. But, that’s it for now!
