Why Are Horses Branded ?

Livestock animals including horses are branded for one main reason. And the reason is for easy identification, either before or after sale.

People mark livestock so it’s to identify the owner, and each ranch etc usually has its own brand. The main method of branding was hot branding however there are now many other alternatives.

These brands also help identify livestock during natural disasters etc.

Horses can be branded almost anywhere, however I’ll be listing three popular spots.

Hot Branding

This practice has gone largely out of style, and many livestock owners have turned to different alternatives.

However hot branding consists of pressing a heated metal shape against an animals skin, which brands the animal. This brand is one of the most painful for the animal, hence why it’s been disregarded for other methods.

Freeze Branding

Freeze branding is one of the most popular branding techniques, since the brand left is highly visible and can be read better than most others.

Freeze branding consists of using liquid nitrogen or dry ice to cool a branding iron, so the iron the iron can alter the hair follicles on the animal.

Freeze branding causes almost no permanent harm to the animal's skin, and it is far less painful than a hot-iron brand, hence why this method is more commonly used.
