Chapter Four: Frenemy

Bug popped her lenses into place and fixed her wig. She sighed heavily and closed the door behind her. Zim was already outside, waiting for what he called “the bus”. Apparently, it was a human transportation device.

“Do we have to go?” she asked. “They’re going to suspect something if you walk in with another green-skinned human!”

“Eh!” He turned towards her. “Not a problem! I already have a brilliant plan! Luckily the humans are also really stupid. Well, except for the Dib.”

“The Dib,” Bug repeated. The big head boy. She looked up as a giant yellow machine turned the corner into their cul de sac. It halted to a screeching stop, and the doors opened. She followed Zim inside and could feel eyes on her. Bug realized that those eyes were Dib’s. She avoided looking back and sat next to Zim, fairly close to the back of the bus where Dib and a purple-haired girl were. Bug pulled a small game console out of her pak and played on it while the bus bumped along on the way to skool.

“Terrible news class,” the teacher, Ms. Bitters, announced. Bug awkwardly stood next to her. “We have a new student. This is Bug, Zim’s sister. But that doesn’t matter, because we will all implode in the vacuum of space eventually. So please, Bug, take your seat. I sent Bob back to the underground classroom for this.”

Bug looked around the room and saw that the only empty seat was the one behind Dib. She gave a worried look over at Zim and made her way to the gross looking seat. Dib glared at her the entire time, and once she sat down, he turned towards her.

“Oh come on!” he shouted. “Seriously?! Don’t tell me that none of you are even the slightest bit suspicious of ANOTHER green-skinned student!”

“Shut it, Dib,” Zim argued. “I’ll have you know that siblings look alike, and skin conditions can be genetic. Have you no knowledge of your own species?”

Dib scowled and faced the front of the room again. Bug covered her eyes. Could that have gone any worse? She opened them at the sound of crinkling paper. Dib was handing her a small slip folded up. She opened it up and there were some scribbles that she didn’t understand. She pulled a translator device out of her pak and scanned the writing. The screen read “you won’t get away with this” in the only writing she could understand: Irken. She wrote something down in her own language, squished the paper into a ball, and threw it at Dib’s head. He glared at her and picked up the ball from the ground.

“Time for another horrible lesson, children,” Ms. Bitters began. “Today, we will be talking about our horrible history.”

Bug tuned out the creepy teacher and stared out the window next to her. Is this what my life has come to? she wondered. All these dreams of becoming an invader reduced to… this? Is this where being considerate gets you to? The Tallest won’t ever take me back. I’m going to have to make a life here on Earth. Might as well make it enjoyable for myself. She looked over at Zim, who was staring anxiously at the clock on the wall. A few seconds later, a loud bell rang.

Students were getting out of their seats and Bug followed, trying to catch up with Zim, who had already left the classroom. She followed the groups of kids through a door, which led outside. There were metal bars and play-things set up. Bug realized that this was a playground for human children. She walked forward to explore when a hard shove knocked her sideways.

“Where are you from, huh?” Dib asked, standing over her.

“Not Big-Headville, unlike you,” she retorted. He frowned at her.

“My head’s not big! Listen here, alien, I’ll find out what you’re up to. Earth is NOT yours for the taking!”

“Who said I was here to conquer Earth?” Bug objected. “Maybe I’m just stuck here. At least it’ll be more fun now with you around to annoy.” She got up and realized that she was taller than Dib. How did I ever let him capture me that night?

“Fun? You think being here is fun?!” He shouted. “Now I have to worry about TWO aliens!”

“Nah, still just one.” Bug pointed at Zim, who was across the playground, shouting at a few kids playing with a ball. “I told you, I’m not here to conquer Earth.”

“Stuck here then?” Dib asked. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“It’s a long story,” Bug explained. “Let’s just say that I don’t really belong anywhere anymore. Earth’s all I got now.” She looked up at the sky, then back at Dib. She thought she could see a sympathetic look in his eyes, but, even if there was, it quickly disappeared. “Go after Zim all you want. Just leave me alone.”

Dib’s scowl disappeared, then he shook his head and said, “Fine then, have it your way, alien!” He stomped over to where the girl with purple hair was sitting, focused on a video game in her hands. Bug watched him go, then jumped as the bell’s sound startled her. She quickly rushed inside, preparing herself to sit through another boring lecture from Ms. Bitters.

Bug ripped her lenses out and tossed her wig across the house. Her eyes teared up because of how long she wore the lenses for, and she scratched the top of her head where the wig was. She flopped onto the couch and sighed, watching the front door open. A green dog walked inside, followed by a purple cat. They both grabbed the zippers on their bellies and were actually GIR and BIT in disguises, giggling to each other and kicking their furry outfits aside. “BIT!” Bug shouted.

“Yes, master?” The tiny robot rushed over, turning red.

“I’m going to need you to build me a ship using the remaining pieces from my spittle runner. The crash site is where the pieces are,” Bug explained. “This is where your technology skills come in handy.”

“Yes, ma’am.” BIT grabbed her cat costume and put it back on. GIR put on his disguise and walked over her. She waved a hand towards him, signaling that he should not follow. He made a sad noise and plopped himself onto the ground, watching BIT leave.

“Hey GIR?” Bug asked. He perked his head up. “Can you make me some of those… what do you call them… waffles?”

“EEEEEE!” he giggled, running into the kitchen. Bug perked her antennae up at the sound of a knock at the door. She got up and walked over, placing her hand on a screen that appeared in front of her. The door faded away to show her who was there, but it only faded away for her, not the person outside. It was Dib, holding a small device in his hand. Bug took her hand away from the screen and turned the doorknob. Dib jumped once it opened, and Bug realized she wasn’t wearing her disguise. Whatever.

“What do you want, Glasses-boy?” Bug said.

“I have a name,” he muttered.

“Oh, I’m sorry, DIB,” she said sarcastically.

“I was just wondering if you’d place this spy camera in Zim’s lab for me?” Dib reached his hand out to reveal a small spying device with an eyeball symbol on it.

“Why would I- oh what the heck.” Bug grabbed the tiny device from him and studied it in the fading sunlight.

“Wow, you’re actually going to help me?” Dib asked. “Never thought I’d get this far.”

“No point in him taking over anyway, so might as well stop him from making stupid plans,” Bug muttered. She saluted to Dib and closed the door. She watched out the window as he left, barely escaping the gnome field as the disturbing lawn decorations tried to grab him. Bug walked into the kitchen and GIR waved to her, standing on one of the chairs to reach the stove. Bug stepped over to the toilet and dropped the little spying device inside, pulling the string above and watching it shoot down into the lab below. She thought she saw a piece missing from it when she felt a pinch on the side of her head. She rubbed the spot and there was a small lump there now. Bug hopped into the toilet herself and went down. When she got to the lab, she saw Zim there, working on something on one of the tables. Bug walked over to one of the main computer monitors and said, “Computer, analyze this thing on my head.”

“It won’t listen to you, silly trainee,” Zim said.

“Processing…” the computer responded. “Thing on Bug’s head is a tracking device with a built-in microphone, with a signal coming from a device not far from here.”

“WHAT?!” Bug began to claw at the device, hoping to remove it.

“You’re just going to hurt yourself,” Zim explained. “Computer? Remove the device.”

“Yes, master.”

A large robotic claw emerged from the wall, picking up Bug by her head. Another smaller claw grew out of the first one and grasped onto the tracking device, ripping it out of her skin.

“OW!” she shrieked, the machine setting her down and crushed the device. “You didn’t tell me it was going to HURT!”

“Hehehe,” Zim chuckled. “Where did that device even come from? Surely you would have noticed it was there when it attached.”

Bug frowned. “Dib.”

“EH?! Dib? How so very expected of him!” Zim continued to work on whatever it was he was doing. Bug sighed and headed back up to the house. GIR was setting the table with stacks and stacks of what she guessed were the Earthly waffles. He squealed in excitement as she approached, sitting down at the table with her. He instantly started gulping down waffles, many at a time.

Bug picked up a fork utensil and stabbed a waffle, taking a bite. They’re DELICIOUS! She started eating a few more, quickly growing stuffed with the Earth food. “My compliments to the chef,” she said, and GIR smiled while eating more. Bug got up and walked over to the front window and stared outside. Dib. Why did he put a tracking device on me? Does he not trust me? I told him I’m not taking over the planet. Looks like I’m gonna have to convince him of that because he clearly has trust issues.

What has Zim done to that boy?
