Well these tips can work for any bird but I'm not sure since I only own pet Doves as birds so I don't know if it works for Budgies or any other species of birds. But it could work for other species as well , still I am not sure so that is why the title is ‘ Pet Doves ’ instead of ‘ Pet Birds ’. Anyway so let us start !

:warning: NOTE ! :warning: Before you do decide to read and do this , please that this is no professional advice , this is only my experience which worked out for me , and a few other friends of mine in real life. It also had worked for Flare’s budgie named Yellowy.

________________ ✓ Basics ✓ _________________

Now for the basics first , which are that you should only try this when you have enough time to do all of this since it took me three hours at first. I would recommend doing this on a Saturday or Sunday , or whenever you do not have school/work since you'll have more time to enjoy with your dove , it is very fun , trust me ! As this will be your very first time to take your dove outside of its cage and play with it , so first try it in a small , closed space. And make sure isn't very high , and it doesn't has to be very small either. At first its better to have a normal height. Well you can use a indoor play tent used for kids , it will be good for the first free flight. If it is already completly covered then that it is great ! But if it's not like mine is and has open windows or doors then you should use a blanket or a few old newspapers to cover both the window and the door. After you have done making the basics and the environment of the area which your gonna free flight your dove in. Then before you actually take your dove outside , you still have some work to do which is...

___________ ✓ Materials We Need ✓ ___________

The materials which we need for this is a Blanket to cover any openings of your space which your using for this , if you do not want to use a blanket for this then you can also use a newspaper or a picnic sheet. But in my opinion , a blanket or a picnic sheet would be the best , it worked out great with me for sure. Second you need is a shopping bag or a food bowl. You may also need a small water bowl as well , it will be much better if these two things are available. Third , you may also need a small sheet for your dove to sit on if the ground/floor is hard. Dove feet are very soft and can get injured easily from anything hard or sharp , that is why this is necessary , but if you already have a carpet then it is not really needed. Now let us move onto...

_____________ ✓ Toys & Treats ✓ ______________

Toys and Treats are the most important things to calm down your dove , especially when it's scared. Try a toy which your dove does likes to play with in its cage so it doesn't gets even more frightened. This way sure did worked out for me when I first tried with Tuffy a few days ago. So treats , take a small piece of a apple and show it to the dove , don't force it since your dove might already be scared from the new environment. You should also take some normal bird seeds which you dove usually eats in her cage , put the bird seeds in the food bowl and place it somewhere near the dove and a bit away from you. Also take some normal { If it's hot then take a bit cold water } water in the water bowl which your dove drinks from in its cage daily. Put it near the food bowl but not very close to it since the food might get a bit wet and Doves { Especially Ringneck Doves } don't like to eat wet food like bird seeds. Also put the toys a little away from the food and water so your dove doesn't thinks that the toys are food too and tries to eat them. Now for the next topic...

____________ ✓ Torch Light(s) ✓ ______________

The more the lights you have the more the better since Dove’s { Especially Laughing Dove’s } eyesight gets very weak in the dark and it gets scary for them. So that is way it is much great if you have a whole of lights in the covered tent , especially if it is dark. Your Doves may enjoy more if the light is more and the covered tent is more brighter. At least Tuffy does loves bright torch lights , Tuffy also plays with them a bit by making a shadow of her then biting it and trying to eat it.

____________ ✓ Calming Music ✓ _____________

Calming Music is very important for every type of bird who is scared from a new environment or anything else. It isn't always necessarily important that the music or song has to be for a dove. You can even use some human songs which your dove may seem to enjoy. Like I actually use a song called ‘ Rainbow ’ from a movie called MLP , the singer of this song is named SIA , anyway I use this song to calm down my Tuffy and Fluffy both. And they actually do seem to enjoy this song , I actually like it as well , it is my favorite song nowadays anyway so yeah... Fluffy sometimes even goes to sleep while listening to this song which I would play near her. Now for the next one...

_________ ✓ Sticks/Perching(s) ✓ __________

Doves { Especially Ringneck Doves } love sticks/perchings for them to sit on and enjoy the view. So that is why it is important to have atleast one stick or perching in the tent so your dove can sit on it. Many Doves , like Ringneck Doves even make a laughing type of sound when they fly up and sit on their sticks/perchings. So if you can , then this is also great but if you can't then it isn't really important. You can always raise your arm and let your dove sit on your arm instead like a perching. Like I have a perching inside my tent for Tuffy but she still loves to sit on my arm , hand , shoulder and head. And now lastly for...

______________ ✓ Q & As ✓ _________________

Here is a number of frequently asked questions about this which I have gathered around , so now these are the answers.

Q ~ When will my dove calm down ?

A ~ In a few minutes , if you give it more attention , then even more faster.

Q ~ When will my dove get used to this ?

A ~ If you continue this everyday , then your dove will be used to this in about two { 2 } or three { 3 } days.

Q ~ What if my dove suddenly flies up and panics in fear ?

A ~ Quickly take your finger very near it or anything which it can sit on before your dove gets any injured. When you'll give your dove the thing to sit on , it probably will and calm down slowly.

Q ~ What to do if my dove falls in her water ?

A ~ Make sure it doesn't happens but if it accidentally does then quickly take her out and dry her by using a warm towel or tissue.

Q ~ What to do if my dove flies on my head and I don't want her to sit on my head ?

A ~ Just slowly take your hand near the dove’s feet and it will soon get up on your hand , then you can take it down of your head.

Q ~ What to do if my dove is afraid of the shadows caused by the light ?

A ~ Turn off the light and calm your dove down , try on the light after a while slowly.

Q ~ What to do if my dove doesn't eats any thing ?

A ~ It just probably might be afraid.

Q ~ What does it means if my dove fluffs up her feathers ?

A ~ It means that she is very scared , try to calm her down , if she's scared of you , then back off and slowly try calming her down later again.

Well every species of Dove has a different personality , like a Laughing Dove is a little bit shy near humans , but when it gets to know you and trust you , then it's very friendly and playful. A Ringneck Dove isn't shy with humans but a bit aggressive and bites. But still when it trusts you , it's very friendly and playful as well. As I said , every dove even same species has different personality.
