A brief, pre-novel history:

After losing her parents, Opal went to live with her maternal Aunt, Yasmin, and cousins at the magic shop in Vesuvia. Yasmin never had any children of her own but had taken in two of her brothers children alongside Opal, and had fostered and adopted several other children in her time. Overall, Opal’s skill in magic meant that her Aunt decided she would be the best choice for taking over the shop when she ed on. Her cousins scattered and most left Vesuvia after this. Until she met Asra, she lived quite a solitary life, which suited her well, but ultimately realised that company was pleasant, even if she often struggled with the drive to seek it.

Obviously, she has no memory of this, or the further events that occurred before she re-awoke, devoid of memory.
