Hiking is defined as “a long, vigorous walk,

usually on trails or footpaths in the

countryside.”

It is a great form of exercise, as it is

convenient and requires no specific

equipment. Hikers can also choose how long

or difficult they want their hike to be.

Hiking is also a great way to connect with

the great outdoors and take in the lovely

views. This can be done alone or with a

group of people.

Navigational Tools

Always be sure to bring a map, com, or

GPS on your hikes so you know where you

are and where you’re going at all times.

You’ll also want to know where the campsite,

water sources, rest areas, and emergency

exits are located. It is recommended to bring

a map or com, even if you have a GPS,

as a backup plan.

Water

Perhaps the most important item to pack is

water. It is very crucial to remain hydrated

so that your body can operate at its best;

said hydration should begin before the trip

and remain throughout the entire duration.

that water is important no

matter how the weather conditions are.

Food

Hiking involves a lot of physical activity, so

eating is important to replenish energy.

You’ll want to eat 50 to 100 carbohydrates

every 30 minutes. Some good hiking snacks

that are both lightweight and nutritious

include: trail mix, dried fruit, granola,

bananas, cereal, etc.

Clothing

When hiking, you’ll want to wear workout

clothes that are designed for physical

activity. Long pants or tights protect you

from scratching your legs on bushes and

such along the trail; the same logic can be

applied to long sleeve shirts. Avoid wearing

normal clothes, such as jeans that will be

uncomfortable, especially when wet from

sweat. As for footwear, a good comfortable

pair of sneakers is usually the best bet.

Always to pack for rain and other

unexpected weather conditions.

Safety Items

Some important safety items to bring on all

hikes are: a fire starter to keep warm and to

signal for help if needed, a whistle to call for

help, a flashlight to see in the dark, a

first-aid kit in case of injury, and a

multi-purpose tool/knife

Sun Protection

Sunscreen and sunglasses are necessary to

bring along to protect you from UV

radiation. Aim for a sunscreen that is SPF 15

or higher and sunglasses that provide 99 to

100% UV protection. Sunscreen should be

reapplied regularly, especially if you are

sweating.

Bug Spray

You’re sure to encounter many insects on

your hike; bringing a bug spray along will

help repel those pests and protect you from

annoying bites. Be sure to reapply regularly.

Trash Bag

Pack your own trash bag to dispose of any

garbage you may have. This way you can

keep the hiking trails litter free.

Backpack

You’ll want a comfortable backpack that

doesn’t put stress on your back and

shoulders. Make sure it rests high on your

back, close to your body and wear both

straps at all times.

Pick a Beginner Friendly Trail

If you’re just starting out, you should avoid

choosing a hike that’s too difficult—you

don’t want one that’s too long or has too

much climbing. If needed, there are many

great resources online that can help you

find a trail.

Additionally, you’re gonna wanna familiarize

yourself with the trail before your hike.

Consider the length, difficulty, turns, and

where things such as restrooms are located.

Time it Right

If you’re looking to avoid running into other

people, you’ll want to begin your hike as

early as possible. On the contrary, if you’re

looking for company or are afraid to hike

alone, you may want to go at a more popular

time.

It is also important to check the weather

before hiking.

Lastly, check the park website to make sure

that they’re actually open before you show

up.

Conserve Your Energy

, hiking is not a race. You don’t

want to start off too fast and waste all of

your energy too quickly—you never know

what situations you may need that energy

for later. Stay at a comfortable pace to take

in the fresh air and beautiful scenery.

Watch Your Step

Be conscious of where you’re walking at all

times to avoid injury by means of slipping,

tripping, or stepping in something

poisonous.

Inform Someone

Telling another person where and when

you’ll be hiking is a tip that could be

potentially life saving. If something were to

happen, your chances of receiving help will

go up significantly.
