April is for Autism Awareness Month :art: :performing_arts:

Hello there everyone!

Real quick before starting, I'd just like to give a thank you to everyone who enjoyed our little prank on the community. You all were a good sport about it and we appreciate it.

I've also done a challenge like this for last year, and it's basically the same thing. Without further ado, let's begin!

This April is Autism Awareness Month

For those of you that do not know what autism is or have very little understanding of it, I will provide very helpful information below; since it is not as easy to understand for most.

What is Autism?

Autism or otherwise known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability; signs typically appear during early childhood and affect a person’s ability to communicate, and interact with others. ASD is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a “spectrum condition” that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees.

Some of the behaviors associated with autism include delayed learning of language; difficulty making eye or holding a conversation; difficulty with executive functioning, which relates to reasoning and planning; narrow, intense interests; poor motor skills’ and sensory sensitivities. Again, a person on the spectrum might follow many of these behaviors or just a few, or many others besides. The diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder is applied based on analysis of all behaviors and their severity. (Information from autism-society.org)

Autism comes in many many forms and is not contained within ONE single disorder. It is many things to many people.

This video will hopefully explain the spectrum a bit better for those of you who would like to learn more.

Why are you sharing this?

I am sharing this because I, as well as many others in the world, have a family member or someone close to them with this disorder and as you can see, it's not the same for everyone. It's very broad and diverse; not an easy topic to explain when only briefly discussed.

If you know one Autistic person, you know ONE person.

With people comes great diversity that cannot because simply bottled into one thing. Autism is only diagnosed by a doctor and is not curable. It is a life long thing that these people go through.

Great, well what do you want us to do?

The purpose of this post is to give all of you a challenge.

You can create anything you want. Be it a drawing, song, music, poem, dance, or even your own cosplay! Anything along the lines of Autism Awareness is all gold. As long as it is your own creation, you can do anything you want. It's all to celebrate and give this month the love it deserves :heart:

When does the challenge end?

The challenge will end when the month ends, Tuesday April 30th. However, you do not have to stop your creative thoughts here! If you have more to share then by all means do it.

It would mean the world to me if you all ed. If you can't it's understandable. This month just has a special place in my heart because my younger brother has autism, and he is the greatest joy and friend anyone could ever have :heart:

Sesame Street has done the great honor of creating a character for specifically talking about and explain autism to young kids. This character is named Julia and she has autism.

I will be drawing her consecutively until the month is over. I will show off my progress and I hope you love the ending result!
