Betta Imbellis

The betta imbellis, which resides in Southeast Asia, is originally native to Malaysia, Indonesia, and Southern Thailand. The word “imbellis” is latin for ‘peaceful’, as this is yet another betta species you can keep together. They have a dark base color, blue scales, and a caudal fin with red highlights. They prefer heavily planted aquariums with tannins, leaf litter, and floating plants. Live or frozen foods such as daphnia, bloodworms, or artemia should be provided, although they will take to pellets in time. This particular betta is prone to obesity, so care should be taken in how much food they are offered. This species has also been hybridized with B. mahachaiensis, B. smaragdina, and B. splendens, so when purchasing, you want to make sure to check the seller’s reliability and where they source the fish.

Q: How often should I do water changes?

A: It depends on the bioload of your tank! For tanks 1-2 gallons, do 30% water changes every other day. For tanks 2.5-4 gallons do 30% water changes 2x weekly. And for 5+ gallons, do 30% water changes weekly!

- How did you get into betta keeping? How long have you been keeping bettas?

I’ve been keeping Cece for almost 1 year. My school teacher brought a fish into the class one day, and I immediately knew that I would love her and take care of her. Nobody really took care of her and she was living in a jar, so I got some money, did some research, and moved her to a tank with the proper set up. I did everything myself. Now she lives with me and she is a happy and healthy fish :)

- What bettas do you have now? Could we get some pictures of them?

I have my current one- Cece. I will send you a photo!
