Poseidon was the well known god of the sea however this was not the only thing that he had rule over. He was also ruled over earthquakes, storms and horses. Despite his protective and popular image of a god, he is one of the most short tempered gods. As well as having a moody attitude and being greedy. He is one of twelve Olympian Gods greek mythology and one of the three gods to rule over the world. The other two being his brothers, Hades and Zeus.
Only after the Titans had been destroyed, did they pull straws to decide over which part they would rule. Zeus getting the skies, Hades getting the underworld and Poseidon then got the seas. However the only mention of that particular moment is written by Homer in the Iliad.
Poseidon was seen as the protector of many seafarers in the Hellenic cities and colonies, may looked to him for protection and guidance when sailing across the seas, however one soon saw Poseidon’s fury when he ed the Greeks against the Trojans the hero of Odyssey tried to act in revenge by making Poseidon's son blind. In retaliation he acted to give the hero storms so great they lost their ship, companions and set their actions to a delay of 10 years. Once again this is only recorded in the Iliad by Homer.
In Plato’s Timaeus and Critias, the (now lost) city of atlantis would be where Poseidon resided. Poseidon is seen as one of the most major civic gods among several cities such as Athens and was second of importance to Athena. Where as in other cities such as Corinth and Magna Graeciahe was seen as the “Chief God” in the Polis
In other texts Poseidon was also one of the caretakers of the Oracle of Delphine and he worked alongside Apollo on many occasions and in different realms. In one example of them working together would be with the colonists.
Apollo would provide them authorization to move and settle and then Poseidon would watch over them as they moved, providing fresh water sources. However this often came at a price, although many were willing to bargain with it.
His trident was significant in many ways, although it’s origins is mixed between some believing he forged the Trident himself or whether in the text of Pseudo-Apollodorus Bibliotheke it was the cyclops who made his trident, but either way it was to represent his image which is shown in many art pieces of him now.
According to the third vatican mythographer the three prongs of the trident symbolizes 3 things. The three properties of water : liquidity, fudencty and drinkability
However when seen in the Roman text, its Roman name being the Trident of Neptune, they wished it symbolised the 3 parts of the water. As there are seas, rivers and streams to which would be under the Tridents control.
In modern scholarship, they believe that Zeus’s thunderbolt and Poseidon’s trident were both from the sacred labrys but where distinguished when they picked their rule, and Zeus then claimed ownership of the Thunderbolt.
In another proposal it is stated that Poseidon would be equal to the powers of Zeus but in the marine aspect. Which when you think they are brothers, is highly possible.

His anger
he was often as mean to those as he was kind to others, as stated before he was known for being highly moody and having a short temper with those who crossed him, causing chaos for the individual or group responsible
Earth-shaker
He earned this nickname when striking the earth with his trident, causing various earthquakes wherever he wanted
Poseidon assisted in the battle against the Trojans, as many bless him for, and so he then worked alongside Apollo, however during the battle he was ordered to withdraw from the fight. With reluctance he obeyed
He was the god of the sea that would protect sailors from any harm on their travels, asking for calm seas and was known for navigation and people also worshipped him for that.
His brothers are Zeus and Hades
Despite owning a palace with corals and gemstones (some people believe this was atlantis) he spent most of his time in Mount Olympus than at home
He was much like Zeus and liked to flaunt his power in many ways, some working out but most of them not. And when things didn’t go his way and he lost his temper, he would often resort to violence.
His main source of transport was a chariot that was pulled by 4 horses
Despite his connection to chariots and ships and control over the seas and horses. It was Athena who made them both.
