Beep. Beep. Beep.
The relentless beeping of what sounded to be a machine.
What was making that noise?
Only moments later did Dib realize that he was gaining back his senses. It seemed like hearing came back first, and he easily recognized the beeping of a heart monitor behind him. He could smell the scent of cleaning supplies in the air, as if where he was was highly sanitary.
Where am I?
He could now feel the bed underneath him, as well as the light blanket draped so neatly on top of it all. There was a soft cushion under his head. His glasses were gone. He went to feel around for them, when he felt something stuck in the top of his hand. He very slowly opened one eye to see an IV attached to him. His gaze followed the tube all the way to where it was attached to the IV bag next to him. The realization hit him like a brick.
He was in the hospital.
He blinked a few times. Most of the room was blurry to him. But he felt something in his other hand. Someone.
Dib squeezed his right hand, moving his thumb around to feel what, or more who, was there. But he could recognize that three-fingered hand anywhere.
“Bug?”
He looked over at his friend, who had had her face hidden in her one arm, resting on the armrest of the bed. As soon as she had heard his voice, she had lifted her head up. It was hard to tell, but she seemed to have had the most worried look Dib had ever seen on her face before. Without speaking, her free hand grew closer to his face, and he realized right away that she was putting on his glasses for him.
Dib blinked, scanning the room a little more before looking back at her. Of course she had her disguise on, and because of this it was easier to tell that she had been crying. Her eyes and nose were all red, even if the human appearance was a simulation.
“I-I’m sorry, I-“ Bug stammered, not able to meet his eyes. “This is a-all my fault...”
Dib was confused. How had he ended up here? What was she talking about? He tried thinking of the last thing he ed from today. Him and Bug had been walking home from skool, as per usual. But what else had happened?
There was a clock on the wall. Dib peered over at it, his eyes widening when he saw what time it was. How was it morning when they had just left skool? Then it hit him.
He had been here overnight.
His gaze shot back to Bug. He wanted to know everything. “Bug...” he spoke softly, his voice coming out more hoarse than he had expected it to. “What happened to me...?”
She suddenly looked more hurt than before, but proceeded to take in a deep breath and collect herself before speaking. “Yesterday,” she started. “We were walking home, ? I had heard that noise in the alleyway. You had told me not to go in there but I did anyways. I had walked back out with a fluffy cat in my arms. Do you that?”
Now that Dib thought about it, he did it. The cat had been an orange color. He could already tell where the story was going, but listened to her anyways. He nodded to answer her question.
“Well...” Her voice got quieter. “I had brought the cat over to you. Y-You told me not to, a-and I assumed you were just scared of cats. So, I-I thought that I could help you get over your fear and have you pet the cat. B-But as soon as the cat had barely touched your skin...your face got all red and you were gasping for air. You collapsed onto the ground, a-and I called 911 when it was clear you were having trouble breathing. I-It was scary... I-I didn’t know you were... a-allergic...” Tears began to build up in her eyes again.
Oh no. She thinks this is her fault. She must be feeling the worst of guilt right now.
Dib squeezed her hand. “Hey,” he spoke, managing to make his voice sound more normal. “I should have told you that I was allergic. It’s my fault for not informing you.” He chuckled a little, trying to lighten the mood. “But look. I’m okay now, see? Good ol’ Dib!” He smiled at her, putting his arms in the air in a dramatic way. The IV tube flopped around.
Bug took this as a chance to just lean forward for a hug. It’s like she had been holding back from giving a hug the entire time they had been at the hospital. Dib nervously returned the hug, glad that someone was there for him.
A sudden alarmed look from Bug made her back away from him. She seemed to be looking at the heart monitor. Dib listened, embarrassed to hear how fast his heart was racing now. All because of that hug.
“Uh oh,” Bug spoke nervously. “You’re face is turning red again! Should I call for a nurse?!”
Dib held his hands up quickly to stop her. “No! I’m fine, see? There are no cats here! Just you and me. And I... prefer it that way.” Gosh that only made his face grow redder.
Bug gave him another concerned look before sitting back down and watching him carefully. Her face suddenly had a look of recognition. “OOOOHHH!” she said. “You’re blushing! You’re doing that blushing thingy!” She pointed to his face.
Dib chuckled awkwardly. “Haha, yeah...” He scratched the back of his neck and stared at the floor.
Bug sighed in relief. “Well, good news!” She said, resting her elbows on the bed’s armrest. She held her head in her hands and gazed up at him. “The nurse that had come in earlier this morning said that if you woke up, you’d be able to get out of here by lunchtime!” She gave him the most excited look, and Dib found it rather adorable. “So I thought that as soon as you’re out of here, we can go get ice cream!” She giggled.
Dib gazed back down at her, absolutely hating that heart monitor right now. “That sounds like a great idea! We could even split a sundae if you’d like.”
Bug’s eyes seemed to light up even more than usual. She pushed herself up with her hands on the arm rest just so she’d be closer to him. “Will the sundae have chocolate syrup on it?!” she asked excitedly.
A red-faced Dib replied, “As much as you could ever dream of.”
